Google Messages Set to Reintroduce YouTube Video Feature

In August of last year, Google removed a notable feature from its Google Messages application, which permitted users to access YouTube videos directly within chat threads. This functionality allowed recipients to view videos without leaving the messaging platform, thereby facilitating seamless communication. When a user shared a YouTube link, tapping on it would open a small video player, enabling not just the recipient but also other participants in a group chat to watch the video together while continuing the conversation.

This integration was designed to enhance user experience by minimizing the disruption of switching between apps. Google had claimed that it aimed to “eliminate the hassle of switching back and forth” between Messages and YouTube.

Recently, signs indicate that Google may be preparing to restore this feature. The latest beta version of Google Messages, v20250319, includes new code strings discovered by tech sleuth AssembleDebug, hinting at the reintroduction of the Picture-in-Picture (PiP) YouTube video player. Among the new strings are references to buttons for pausing and playing YouTube videos, raising hopes for the feature’s comeback.

While AssembleDebug succeeded in getting the video player to launch during a chat, they encountered difficulties in making the PiP window operate effectively. The ultimate decision now rests with Google regarding whether to proceed with the rollout of this functionality. Understanding the motives behind the initial removal could provide insights into the company’s future plans for it.

Reasons Behind the Initial Removal

The rationale behind Google’s decision to eliminate the PiP video player from Google Messages remains largely unexplained. Some speculate that the feature might not have seen widespread use. Another angle to consider is Google’s potential interest in driving users toward a YouTube Premium subscription, which offers an enhanced Picture-in-Picture experience that users can utilize across their device’s display.

This feature was first integrated into Google Messages back in 2022, but the code was eliminated in 2024. Given this cycle of updates, one might anticipate that the feature’s return is not imminent and could be delayed until 2026. However, with the groundwork seemingly laid for its revival, there’s no compelling reason for Google to wait that long to reinstate this practical multitasking tool within Google Messages.
