What you need to know

Google One currently allows for the backup of text message data but does not include details from SIM cards. Future updates may introduce the capability to back up SIM data, potentially focused on eSIM technology, which would streamline the backup and restoration process for Android devices.

According to findings from Android Authority, Google appears to be developing methods to include eSIM information in its backup systems. The relevant code snippets were revealed in an APK teardown of the beta version 25.16.33 of Google Play Services, marking “SIMs” as a new backup data type. However, this feature is not yet active and there are no guarantees it will be implemented in an upcoming update.

These code findings align with updates made to Android’s device backup settings page, which now specifies that “other device data” encompasses “contacts, call history, device settings, apps, app data, SMS, MMS messages, and SIMs stored in your Google Account.”

While it’s not directly mentioned, it stands to reason that this functionality would be primarily aimed at eSIMs, given that traditional SIM cards can be swapped easily between devices. However, as both Apple and Samsung provide tools for converting physical SIM cards into eSIMs, it’s possible that Google’s upcoming feature might also cater to physical SIMs.

For reference, this is the code snippet indicative of potential future SIM backups:

At present, backing up SIMs is not feasible. Should this capability be integrated in a forthcoming update, it would significantly simplify the restoration process for Android users in comparison to iPhone.

This feature, if implemented, would fall under the Google One device backup offerings and would necessitate a paid subscription to Google One. The timeline for when or if this feature will be publicly accessible remains uncertain.
