Google Photos May Change How RAW Files Are Backed Up

Google Photos offers users 15 GB of free storage, with additional capacity available through the Google One subscription. However, as users are reminded, the available storage is finite, and managing backup sizes is crucial. Different file formats consume varying amounts of space, prompting Google to consider a fresh strategy for handling files, particularly RAW images.

RAW files are favored by photographers due to their uncompressed, minimally processed data that captures more detail compared to JPEGs, which use compression techniques. This level of detail makes RAW images significantly larger in size, leading to longer upload times and increased data usage. Currently, Google Photos backs up both RAW and JPEG files, but the company is reportedly looking at ways to optimize storage by potentially discouraging the backup of RAW files due to their size.

Recent analysis of version 9.8 of the Pixel Camera app by Android Authority uncovered comments in the code suggesting that RAW images may not be set to back up by default. If this change is implemented, users will need to manually enable RAW backups; otherwise, only JPEG files will be saved to Google Photos.

Understanding File Management Enhancements

The potential change signifies that options related to RAW+JPEG storage may be presented in the viewing interface. While RAW files provide enhanced editing capabilities due to their detailed preservation, they do demand more storage space. The anticipated adjustment is expected to assist users in managing their backups more effectively.

Redefining File Format Visibility

Additionally, there appears to be a push from Google to improve the identification of image formats for Pixel users. Currently, distinguishing between JPG and RAW files can be cumbersome, necessitating a trip to Google Photos for verification before uploading to other platforms.

The planned enhancement will categorize DNG images—the preferred RAW format for many Android devices—into a separate RAW Images folder. This should simplify user experiences by preventing RAW files from being mixed with JPEGs in the share menu, allowing for quicker and more accurate selections based on file type.
