Google Revamps Timer and Stopwatch in Search

Google is set to enhance the user experience with the timer and stopwatch features integrated within its Search functionality. This update introduces a more vibrant and user-friendly design, along with some new functionalities accessible from both desktop and mobile devices.

The term “Search” might mislead some regarding its capabilities, as Google has expanded its functions over time, evolving far beyond merely finding information. Beyond debates surrounding AI-generated content and local search results, Google has positioned itself as a versatile tool for numerous everyday tasks, including acting as a calculator. The latest advancements include a refreshed appearance for both the timer and stopwatch within the Search interface.

Users can access these features by simply entering the words “timer” or “stopwatch” into the search bar, regardless of the device they are using. Although Google previously offered these time-tracking tools, 9to5Google has highlighted the recent update, which introduces a splash of color, allowing these tools to stand out distinctly from standard search results.

The timer defaults to a five-minute setting, but now showcases a cleanly centered display. Users will also notice added functionality, including buttons that allow the user to quickly extend the timer by 30 seconds, a minute, or five minutes. Furthermore, a circular progress ring appears around the timer as it counts down, providing a visual representation of the time remaining.

While this update is an improvement, some functionality could still be refined. For instance, editing the timer’s duration may not be intuitive, as users cannot merely highlight existing numbers to alter them. Consequently, the most straightforward method is to enter the desired duration directly into the search bar, such as “timer for one hour and twenty-five minutes.”

Similarly, the stopwatch received a design overhaul, featuring an improved UI and a circular indicator that resembles traditional stopwatches, similar to the Clock app on Android devices. Interestingly, the timer’s visual indicator completes a rotation every four seconds, which raises questions regarding the choice of interval; a one-second or ten-second cycle might have provided a more familiar experience.

Both the timer and stopwatch undergo a color change when paused, shifting from blue to orange. This subtle transition serves as a helpful reminder for users, preventing them from unintentionally forgetting about a paused timer or stopwatch. Although none of these alterations are groundbreaking, it is commendable to see Google enhancing the usability of a feature that already met user needs effectively.
