Google Advances in XR Technology with New Smart Glasses

In a significant move towards the integration of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), Google unveiled its plans for Android XR, a dedicated operating system tailored for VR and AR headsets. This announcement came in December, and was shortly followed by the acquisition of HTC’s Vive XR team in January, adding further expertise to its efforts in this rapidly evolving sector.

At a recent TED event in Vancouver, Shahram Izadi, the lead of Android XR, showcased an innovative pair of prototype smart glasses. Unlike traditional VR goggles, these glasses feature small displays designed to overlay graphical content onto transparent lenses, allowing users to interact with their surroundings while receiving digital enhancements.

Functioning in tandem with a smartphone, the glasses utilize Google’s advanced Gemini AI to perform various tasks. During his presentation, Izadi highlighted the glasses’ capabilities, including real-time translation from Farsi to English and the ability to scan printed material for quick information retrieval.

While specific operational details remain sparse, initial insights suggest that the computational demands are primarily managed by the connected smartphone. This design decision is crucial for maintaining a lightweight and comfortable experience, especially for prolonged use.

A glimpse into Android XR’s potential

Beyond the smart glasses, Google is also collaborating with Samsung on a new initiative dubbed Project Moohan, likely leading to the launch of the “Galaxy XR” goggles. These goggles, in contrast to the smart glasses, will utilize passthrough video technology to merge real-world visuals with virtual elements, enabling users to see and engage with their environment while also harnessing the power to create immersive digital workspaces, including multiple virtual monitors. This innovation was showcased at the same TED event.

The Samsung Galaxy XR goggles are anticipated to be released later this year, with a premium price tag expected to be around $2,500. In addition, Samsung is reportedly exploring the launch of smart glasses that may coincide with the goggles’ release. Meanwhile, Google has not provided a timeline regarding the availability of its smart glasses.
