New Requirements for Android Devices with the Upcoming Android 15

As the Android operating system progresses, the specifications required for devices to run Google’s platform are becoming increasingly stringent. Android 15, which presents significant enhancements over its predecessors, necessitates that smartphones and tablets have a minimum level of internal memory to ensure optimal performance.

Previously, devices were required to offer at least 16 GB of internal storage to operate smoothly with Android 13 or Android 14. However, with the launch of Android 15, this requirement has been raised to a minimum of 32 GB internal memory.

Google has clarified that approximately 75% of this storage will be dedicated to the data partition. This typically encompasses various elements such as system app data, user applications and files, along with any pre-installed system applications.

It is crucial to note that devices failing to meet the 32 GB minimum cannot be upgraded to Android 15, thereby restricting their users from accessing the latest features and enhancements.

Despite these new stipulations, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) still have the ability to produce entry-level Android smartphones that possess less than 32 GB of storage. However, such devices will not be able to integrate Google Mobile Services (GMS). Instead, they must rely on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), which permits more flexible hardware constraints.

Additionally, Android 15 introduces further requirements for manufacturers, including the need for support for emergency services. This functionality allows users to provide emergency contacts and location data swiftly when circumstances demand.

Furthermore, Google has adjusted the RAM requirements for Android 15. Under Android 14, devices with just 2 GB of RAM could only ship with the Android Go Edition. With the new iteration, devices equipped with 3 GB of RAM will also be able to utilize low memory optimizations associated with the Android Go Edition.

Looking ahead, it is anticipated that the RAM requirements will continue to evolve with Android 16, potentially mandating devices with 4 GB of RAM to support Android’s low memory optimizations as well.

While these increased specifications might seem inconsequential to some, it is essential to recognize that a substantial portion of Android users rely on budget-friendly smartphones. Therefore, these adjustments to minimum requirements will undoubtedly impact a wide audience and shape future device offerings.
