Google Wallet to Introduce Digital ID Feature Using US Passports
Google is set to begin beta testing a new feature for Google Wallet that will allow users to convert their US passports into a digital form of identification. This initiative was unveiled in a recent announcement on Google’s official blog.
The introduction of digital IDs derived from passports and state-issued identification will enable travelers to use them as valid forms of identification at designated Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints in various US airports. This feature aims to simplify the security process, alleviating the stress of searching for physical IDs while waiting in line.
However, the capability to use digital IDs is not universal across all airports. Currently, 21 states alongside Puerto Rico have at least one airport where digital IDs can be utilized. Travelers can check the TSA’s digital map to see if their departure or destination airport supports this tech-savvy approach to identification.
The uptake of digital IDs has been progressively expanding throughout the country, with both Android and iPhone users benefiting from this innovation, despite it not being widely available in all states. Notably, major airports in states like Arizona, Colorado, and Georgia have started to accept state IDs through Google Wallet. Additionally, California recently took steps to permit the use of both Apple Wallet and Google Wallet for identification at select airports.
