Google Enhances Smart Home Integration with Gemini
Google is expanding its smart home capabilities through the Gemini app, which will now feature a dedicated Google Home extension. This upgrade allows users to manage various smart devices, including lighting, thermostats, speakers, and more, all synchronized with their Google account.
The introduction of this extension was first announced last November, showcasing Gemini’s potential to interact with smart home systems using natural language commands. Users can now issue straightforward requests such as, “The sun is too bright in the living room,” prompting the system to automatically close the smart blinds. Furthermore, Gemini’s ability has evolved; it can now execute multiple commands in one go, like, “Turn the armchair light on too, but dim the kitchen lamp.” This update enhances user interaction by allowing inquiries about device statuses, including checking if exterior lights are still on.
Another significant feature will enable users to control less sensitive devices directly from their phone’s lock screen. This functionality adds convenience for quick adjustments without needing to unlock the device fully. In addition, enhancements within the app allow users to modify the volume, pause or play media on smart speakers, displays, and televisions seamlessly. The thermostat control interface has also been revamped to align with the design used in the Google Home app, offering a consistent user experience. Moreover, for security-related features such as camera and lock management, Gemini will now prompt users to launch the Google Home app directly, improving ease of access.
This update comes on the heels of a broader enhancement to Gemini, enabling it to perform more intricate tasks across different applications. Users eager to test the new capabilities can do so by signing into Gemini with the same credentials used for Google Home and activating the Google Home extension. While the feature is available starting today, a complete rollout is expected to take place over the next few weeks.
