The Google Pixel 10 series is reportedly under development as the next iteration following last year’s Pixel 9 lineup. As anticipation builds for its official announcement, new insights suggest that Google may incorporate a graphics processing unit (GPU) created by Imagination Technologies, a UK-based firm, for its Tensor G5 system on a chip (SoC) designed for the upcoming smartphones. Specifically, the DXT-48-1536 GPU has emerged as a potential candidate, featuring advanced capabilities like scalable ray tracing, RISC-V firmware support, and 2D dual-rate texturing.

Exploring the Google Pixel 10 Series GPU

A recent article by Android Authority highlights contributions from Yang Yanling, a postgraduate student who explored the integration of RISC-V with Imagination’s GPU intellectual property in a blog post following the RISC-V Day event in Tokyo last month. Although the original article included details about processors leveraging Imagination GPUs—including the Tensor G5—subsequent edits removed references to specific chipsets. Nonetheless, available screenshots indicate that Google is likely to employ the DXT-48-1536 GPU.

This GPU, which is tailored for high-end mobile devices, brings several advancements to graphics processing, such as ray tracing capabilities that can operate across various performance configurations by utilizing a ray acceleration cluster (RAC). Its technology enhances graphics with minimal compromise on visual quality through a technique known as Fragment Shading Rate (FSR), which optimizes the processing of ray-traced effects by reducing the number of fragments that need to be handled. The DXT-48-1536 is expected to offer a 50 percent improvement in top-end compute and texture performance per Scalable Processing Unit (SPU) compared to its predecessor, signaling a significant leap forward in graphical fidelity for the upcoming Pixel 10 series.

In addition to the GPU enhancements, earlier reports indicate that the Tensor G5 SoC may feature notable upgrades related to the always-on compute (AoC) audio processor, a Google Emerald Hill memory coprocessor, the Google GXP digital signal processor (DSP), and the Google EdgeTPU. Furthermore, speculation suggests that this SoC will be manufactured using TSMC’s advanced 3nm process technology, a departure from the Samsung Foundry process used for the Tensor G4, which powered the Pixel 9 series. This shift is anticipated to yield improvements in both performance and energy efficiency, further elevating the capabilities of the upcoming devices.
