Govinda Engages in Spiritual Practices at Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple
Bollywood’s storied figure and current politician Govinda visited the esteemed Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple located in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, over the weekend. Clad in a bright yellow kurta, he participated in traditional rituals, paying homage at one of India’s most revered temples dedicated to Lord Shiva.
During his visit, Govinda performed the devotional act of pouring water over the idol of Nandi, the sacred bull associated with Lord Shiva, a practice cherished by many followers of this faith. Addressing the media, the actor shared his feelings of joy and fulfillment after completing the sacred rituals.
Govinda’s pilgrimage to the temple comes on the heels of a visit by fellow actor Arjun Rampal earlier this month, who also engaged in the spiritual traditions of Mahakaleshwar. Rampal took part in the Bhasma Aarti, a ceremony known for its profound spiritual significance and visual splendor. Dressed in a white shirt, he was honored with a traditional black stole, trimmed in gold thread, bearing the name ‘Mahakal,’ symbolizing deep respect and blessings.
Reflecting on his inaugural experience with the Bhasma Aarti, Rampal expressed, “This was my first experience of Bhasma Aarti. I have never experienced this till now. It was very beautiful, lively, and wonderful. I am very happy to be here. I prayed for harmony in the nation and the world.”
The renowned Bhasma Aarti occurs during the early hours of Brahma Muhurta, typically between 3:30 and 5:30 AM, marking a sacred time for worshippers. The ritual initiates with the opening of the temple’s sanctum sanctorum, followed by a ceremonial washing of the Shiva lingam using a mix of five sacred substances known as Panchamrit, consisting of milk, curd, ghee, honey, and sugar. This is complemented by adorning the deity with aromatic cannabis and sandalwood paste, along with holy ashes, as worshippers offer incense and illuminate the space with lamps amid the resonating sounds of drums and conch shells.
The Mahakaleshwar Temple is nestled along the banks of the Shipra River and holds the status of one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, which are among the most hallowed shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple draws a multitude of devotees every day, many traveling from far and wide to partake in the Bhasma Aarti, particularly during the auspicious month of Shravan.
On the cinematic front, Govinda last appeared in the 2019 film “Rangeela Raja” but has recently made an appearance on “The Great Indian Kapil Show,” showcasing his ongoing presence in entertainment.
