Senator Grassley Calls for Tougher Sanctions Against Putin
Senator Chuck Grassley, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee and the longest-serving Republican member in the Senate, recently urged President Trump to impose stringent sanctions on Russian President Vladimir Putin. Grassley expressed concerns that Putin’s actions demonstrate a manipulative approach towards the United States, stating that he is treating America as if it were “a patsy.”
This statement was made public via a post on X after a recent missile and drone attack by Russia on Kyiv resulted in the deaths of at least 12 individuals, with 90 others sustaining injuries. This assault occurred just days following another Russian strike that claimed three lives in southern Ukraine amidst a 30-hour ceasefire that Putin had unilaterally declared for the Easter holiday.
Grassley conveyed his anguish regarding the ongoing violence, emphasizing the tragic deaths of innocent Ukrainians, particularly women and children. He urged President Trump to recognize the clear evidence of Putin’s tactics and to take decisive action through sanctions.
In the days leading up to Grassley’s statement, Trump had expressed his displeasure regarding the military actions targeting Kyiv, remarking on Truth Social about the unnecessary nature of the strikes. He stated, “Not necessary, and very bad timing. Vladimir, STOP! 5000 soldiers a week are dying. Let’s get the Peace Deal DONE!”
On the diplomatic front, Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, engaged in discussions with Putin in Moscow, focusing on a potential peace agreement. A Kremlin official described the extensive three-hour meeting as a step towards aligning the U.S. and Russia’s positions more closely.
The current situation underscores the complex dynamics of U.S.-Russia relations and highlights the urgency for negotiations aimed at de-escalating the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
