Marjorie Taylor Greene to Legislate Renaming of Gulf of Mexico
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) has announced her intention to introduce legislation aimed at renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America,” a proposal initially put forward by President-elect Donald Trump.
In a recent online post, Greene shared a video featuring Trump discussing this name change, expressing her enthusiasm for the proposal. “President @realDonaldTrump’s second term is off to a GREAT start,” she stated. “I will be introducing legislation ASAP to officially change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to its rightful name, the Gulf of America!”
Earlier that same day, Trump voiced his motivation for the change during a press conference. He criticized Mexico regarding trade and immigration and asserted, “We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. What a beautiful name. And it’s appropriate.”
As Trump prepares to assume office for his second term, he is laying the groundwork for an economic agenda that includes imposing new tariffs. Notably, he had previously announced a 25 percent tariff on products imported from both Canada and Mexico.
In a related development, Trump has recently held discussions with outgoing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who announced his resignation, and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. Throughout these discussions, Trump has frequently criticized Mexico, labeling it a “very dangerous place” governed by cartels.
Moreover, Trump suggested a potential merger between the U.S. and Canada, made during remarks about the political reset following Trudeau’s departure. He argued that such an arrangement could eliminate tariffs and enhance security against external threats, while playfully referring to Canada as possibly becoming the 51st state.
