Border Crossings Show Sharp Decline as Trump Resumes Tough Immigration Policies
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has reported a significant decrease in illegal border crossings, marking a shift from the thousands observed under former President Joe Biden to just single digits in certain areas during President Donald Trump’s current administration. In a recent discussion with CNBC’s Joe Kernen on “Squawk Box,” Abbott highlighted that while El Paso was experiencing around 3,000 crossings daily during Biden’s tenure, that figure has now plummeted to just nine individuals per day.
Returning to office, Trump acted quickly to address what he deemed a border crisis, restarting the construction of the border wall and initiating policies aimed at curbing illegal immigration. Among these measures is a push for undocumented immigrants to utilize the CBP Home app, which allows them to facilitate their own departure from the United States. Additionally, Trump has invoked the Alien Enemies Act, a legislative tool permitting the president to detain or deport non-citizens.
Policy Impact Under Trump Administration
Abbott stated that the response illegal immigrants receive upon entering the U.S. has drastically changed with Trump in office. Under the current administration, those who manage to cross the border face immediate arrest and subsequent deportation, a process that Abbott believes discourages further attempts at illegal crossings.
“We’ve never seen such a dramatic transformation as we have in the past four years regarding border control,” Abbott remarked. He characterized the previous administration’s approach as a “complete failure” to enforce existing immigration laws, resulting in record-high illegal crossings, which he estimates exceeded 11 million. According to Abbott, this surge contributed to heightened crime rates across the country, involving individuals with serious criminal backgrounds.
Shift in Immigration Trends
As Abbott analyzed the current immigration landscape, he noted the stark contrast to previous years. “Since the aftermath of Trump’s election, unlawful entries have declined from what seemed like an overwhelming flow to a mere trickle,” he commented, suggesting that the tough policies implemented are having a tangible effect on controlling illegal immigration.
With immigration policies being a critical focal point for both state and national leaders, the debate continues about the effectiveness and humanitarian implications of these stringent measures as well as their long-term impact on communities along the border.
