Limestone County Man Arrested for Child Sexual Abuse
A Guatemalan national residing illegally in the United States was apprehended in north Alabama on Sunday following allegations of child sexual abuse. The Limestone County Sheriff’s Office reported that Luis Lopez-Martinez, 38, was caught in the act of molesting a child under the age of 12.
A 911 call alerted local authorities to the situation, with the victim’s family reportedly witnessing the abusive act and intervening to detain Lopez-Martinez until law enforcement arrived. Deputy Bradley Fontenot of the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office took Lopez-Martinez into custody.
Details of the Incident
Initially arrested under a different name, Lopez-Martinez’s true identity was confirmed by law enforcement. Following the incident, the child was transported to a nearby hospital for necessary medical evaluation and care.
During subsequent questioning by investigators, Lopez-Martinez allegedly confessed to the crime, remarking, “it is what it is,” as reported by the sheriff’s office. He remains incarcerated, with a bail set at $250,000.
Legal and Immigration Ramifications
In light of the accusations, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has issued an immigration detainer against Lopez-Martinez. This legal action is intended to prevent his release back into the community, even if he posts bail. According to ICE, when local law enforcement honors a detainer request, they notify ICE prior to the release of an individual deemed a potential risk to public safety.
The ongoing investigation by the sheriff’s office may lead to additional charges against Lopez-Martinez, as authorities continue to gather evidence and assess the situation.
Community Response
In a statement, LCSO Sheriff Joshua McLaughlin acknowledged the diligent work of Deputy Fontenot and Investigator Kandace Wilson in pursuing justice for the young victim. The sheriff emphasized the importance of protecting vulnerable members of the community and assured the public of the department’s commitment to ensuring justice in this case.
The investigation is in its early stages, and the sheriff’s office has indicated that they will provide further updates as more information becomes available.
