Note: This article contains spoilers from “Hacks” Season 4, Episode 2.

Upon reviewing the trajectory planned for Marcus in “Hacks” Season 4, Carl Clemons-Hopkins expressed a sense of enthusiasm. This may come as a surprise, given that Episode 2 seemingly concludes Marcus’s development within a narrative that intricately examines the balance between personal ambitions and professional commitments.

“I genuinely root for him because I care about what he represents. I found myself cheering for him with every line,” Clemons-Hopkins remarked. “It’s thrilling to see this character take control of his own destiny, and I hope he motivates others as well.”

Since the inaugural season, Marcus has epitomized the struggle inherent in balancing professional life with personal well-being on “Hacks.” Initially, he played a guiding role for Ava (Hannah Einbinder), serving as evidence of how Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) effectively transformed a devoted fan into a leading COO. However, beneath Marcus’s outward success, a sense of unease loomed, primarily due to his almost obsessive preoccupation with Deborah and her needs. Over the seasons, this fixation drew criticism from various quarters, including his mother, his ex-partner, fellow colleagues, and friends, each cautioning him about his unhealthy devotion. It is not until Season 4 that he finally asserts himself, challenging Deborah and advocating for his interests.

As Deborah’s late-night show experiences significant success, Marcus becomes acutely aware that her expanding QVC ventures could present a conflict of interest. Understanding the importance of the show to his idol, who no longer has time for him, he makes a controversial decision—securing a buyer for the QVC deal without Deborah’s knowledge. “In this high-pressure situation, I believe he saw it as a necessary, albeit questionable, action. Time was not on his side,” remarked Clemons-Hopkins. “He attempted to approach the situation delicately but also needed to protect his interests and business commitments, given the potential risks of lawsuits or losing money.”

This decision leads to one of the most compelling confrontations in the series. Upon Marcus unveiling his plan regarding the QVC deal, Deborah reacts with rage, accusing him of exploiting her success and abandoning her like others in her life. This reaction encapsulates the fiery temperament Deborah is known for. However, unlike Ava, who struggles to maintain composure in the face of Deborah’s wrath, or Jimmy (Paul W. Downs), who often succumbs to her pressures, Marcus manages to remain calm and collected, making him one of the few characters who remains true to himself following a clash with Deborah.

“Marcus recognizes that Deborah’s outburst stems from unresolved issues beyond their immediate disagreement. I believe her reaction is more influenced by her feelings towards Ava, lingering emotions about her sister Kathy, and the anxiety surrounding the show. He unwittingly becomes a safe outlet for her frustrations,” explained Clemons-Hopkins. “What was intriguing was the way he navigated this challenging interaction with professionalism, all while disarming her typical outbursts.”

What stood out for Clemons-Hopkins was that he was able to address the conflict with Deborah without diminishing the mutual respect they hold for each other. “I think Marcus, along with DJ [Kaitlin Olson], are among the rare individuals who have navigated the complexities of their relationship with Deborah and emerged positively,” he stated. “They possess an understanding of her character and choose to ask for patience amidst the chaos, recognizing the aspects of her that they genuinely appreciate.”

Although the conclusion of Episode 2 signifies an end to Marcus and Deborah’s professional collaboration, Clemons-Hopkins is optimistic about their ongoing personal relationship. The actor is also confirmed to make a return later in the season.

“The bond between Marcus and Deborah transcends the confines of their professional relationship. Regardless of the current dynamics surrounding Deborah’s late-night show, I believe they will continue to stay connected,” he asserted.

New episodes of “Hacks” Season 4 are available every Thursday on Max.
