[Warning: The following contains significant spoilers for Hacks Season 4, Episodes 1 & 2.]
Hacks has returned, and while the rivalry between Deborah (Jean Smart) and Ava (Hannah Einbinder) takes center stage, the opening of Season 4 also highlights the growth of Jimmy (Paul W. Downs) and Kayla’s (Megan Stalter) management agency.
In her pursuit to outmaneuver Deborah, Ava is vying for the upper hand, while Kayla is focused on solidifying their agency’s foundation by bringing on a new assistant, introduced in Episode 2 titled “Cover Girls.” Robby Hoffman joins the cast as Randy, a non-industry recruit who faces the challenges of the role with determination.
Fans will remember that Kayla previously held a similar position for Jimmy in their former company, adding a humorous twist to their current dynamic. Stalter expresses excitement about her new co-star, stating, “Robby is incredibly funny, and his character brings a fresh perspective. I’ve always wanted to see Kayla have her own assistant, especially considering how much she enjoyed being Jimmy’s.”
As Kayla welcomes Randy as her assistant, Jimmy eventually agrees to have Randy assist him as well, as they contemplate the official name for their agency—Schaefer & LuSaque or LuSaque & Schaefer. “We always planned for Kayla to get her own assistant, and it was essential that this character contributed positively to the chemistry between Jimmy and Kayla,” says Downs, who co-creates the series. “We’ve long been fans of Robbie, and he was always in our minds when writing this role.”
Downs further notes the intriguing dynamic among the trio, remarking, “Randy adores Kayla just as much as Kayla cherishes Jimmy, creating a lighthearted and entertaining trio.” In this episode, viewers witness Kayla’s attempt to branch out into representing child and pet performers, resulting in a chaotic work environment, but Randy’s eccentricity and helpful disposition impress Jimmy as she navigates her dual responsibilities. “She proves to be an excellent assistant, and you’ll see how she plays a pivotal role as the story progresses,” Downs adds.
Stalter concurs with Downs, saying, “The humor lies in how much Randy adores Kayla, despite being even more eccentric than Kayla and Jimmy. Their interactions will definitely add a comedic layer to the office environment.”
Jimmy and Kayla have evolved significantly since the beginning, transitioning from a more hierarchical relationship to a partnership, yet they are still navigating the complexities of their collaboration. However, adding children and pets into the mix may create new challenges. “Filming those scenes with numerous kids and animals was quite an experience,” Downs recalls, referring to the chaotic client meetings that even left Robby cleaning up after the pets. “Surprisingly, the scene was one of the smoothest to shoot, despite the chaos.”
As Season 4 progresses, viewers should keep an eye on the evolving relationship between Jimmy and Kayla, and feel free to share your thoughts on their newest addition in the comments section below.
