With the fourth season of Hacks now underway, the Emmy-winning series continues to delight not only its viewers but also its creators and cast, particularly regarding the notable figures who support the show.
“Kamala Harris is a fan of the show! That was a significant moment for us,” shares Carl Clemons-Hopkins, who portrays Marcus, the dedicated manager to the iconic stand-up comedian Deborah Vance, played by Jean Smart. The series, which also features Hannah Einbinder as Ava, a young comedy writer facing her own challenges, has received widespread acclaim for its clever writing and has won three Emmys for Smart.
Showrunner Lucia Aniello hints at an exciting season filled with unexpected developments and notable celebrity appearances. “This season promises to keep viewers on the edge of their seats,” she states, mentioning aspirations to bring in big names from the music industry, including Lady Gaga and Cher. Additionally, the team is actively pursuing the legendary Barbra Streisand for a guest appearance.
“We’re really eager to have Streisand join us!” Aniello exclaims. “We keep joking that she loves the show — though we have no confirmation that she’s ever watched it.”
While celebrity charm is part of the allure, showrunner Jen Statsky emphasizes that the heart of this season lies in depicting Los Angeles. Following previous narratives set in Las Vegas, the storyline returns Deborah to L.A., where she embarks on a new journey as the host of a late-night talk show.
“We consider this season a love letter to L.A.,” Statsky remarks. “We have the opportunity to highlight many beloved locations.” Among these is Altadena, the site where Deborah’s fictional home was filmed. Sadly, the mansion used for filming was lost in the recent Eaton Fire, making the dedication to Altadena and L.A. even more poignant. “The community in Altadena has always been supportive of us. It holds great significance to pay tribute to both Altadena and Los Angeles as a whole,” she adds.
During a discussion with Gold Derby at NBCU’s Emmy kick-off luncheon, which celebrated talent from various Emmy-winning productions, Statsky reflected on the meaningful role of comedy, especially in challenging times.
“We believe that humor is essential for culture,” she noted. “Any show that promotes laughter and brings people together is something we’re enthusiastic about.”
The fourth season of Hacks is currently available for streaming on Max.
