Hands-On with the Tecno Camon 40 Series

At the recently concluded MWC 2025, Tecno unveiled its latest lineup of smartphones, the Camon 40 series, which includes the Camon 40 Premier, 40 Pro 5G, 40 Pro, and the standard Camon 40. Leading the pack, the Premier model boasts enhanced specifications, including a more advanced chip, improved display, superior camera features, and faster charging capabilities.

In an interesting move, Tecno adopted a strategy similar to Xiaomi by offering its Pro model in two different versions—one equipped with 5G and another limited to 4G. This approach enables the brand to cater to users in regions where 5G networks are still developing or for those who prefer the cost-effective 4G option.

Having had the chance to test each of the four models, we will highlight the standout features of the Camon 40 Premier first.

Tecno Camon 40 Premier

The Tecno Camon 40 Premier represents a modest upgrade from its predecessor, which is not necessarily a drawback, as the Camon 30 Premier received positive reviews for its performance.

Significant improvements include the design and the chipset. The previous Dimensity 8200 has been upgraded to the more powerful Dimensity 8350, and the phone features a more traditional design. The distinctive two-tone aesthetic remains, with color options including Emerald Lake Green and Galaxy Black.

While the display size has slightly decreased from 6.77 inches to 6.67 inches, it now supports a higher refresh rate of 144Hz. Noteworthy display features include 10-bit color depth and HDR support.

The camera system consists of a robust quad setup, featuring three 50MP cameras on the rear, each with varying focal lengths, and a 50MP front-facing camera, which is impressive for this pricing tier. The main 50MP sensor is paired with a 50MP periscope telephoto lens offering 3x optical zoom and another 50MP ultrawide shooter.

This impressive hardware is powered by a slightly larger 5,100 mAh battery, capable of 70W fast charging.

Tecno Camon 40 Pro 5G and 40 Pro

The Camon 40 Pro is available in two models—one supporting 5G and the other limited to LTE, with the chipset as the primary distinction. The 5G version features a Dimensity 7300 SoC, while the standard model utilizes a Helio G100 chipset.

Aside from the chipset, both versions share nearly identical specifications, including a 6.78-inch OLED display operating at 144Hz, default storage of 8GB RAM and 256GB internal storage, and a camera setup featuring a 50MP main sensor complemented by an 8MP ultrawide lens and a 50MP autofocus-supported selfie camera. It’s noteworthy that the main and selfie cameras are derived from the top-tier Camon 40 Premier, providing a touch of premium features at a lower price point.

However, there are some compromises compared to the previous Camon 30 Pro. The fast charging rate has been reduced from 70W to 45W, the ultrawide camera resolution has dropped to 8MP from 50MP, and the 5G variant utilizes a lower-tier Dimensity 7300 as opposed to the more powerful Dimensity 8200.

Design-wise, the Camon 40 Pro differs significantly from the Premier, featuring a more straightforward vertical camera arrangement that many may find appealing.

The color variants include Emerald Lake Green and Galaxy Black, with an additional Glacier White option available for the Pro models.

Tecno Camon 40

The base model, Camon 40, shares a design similar to the Pros but sports a more straightforward plastic finish. Generally, it mirrors the specifications of the 40 Pro without 5G. The display, chipset, battery, and charging capabilities remain unchanged.

In terms of camera specifications, the only notable difference is in the selfie camera, which is a 32MP sensor without autofocus, contrasting with the 50MP units found in the other models.

Interestingly, the Camon 40 offers the widest range of color options in this series, introducing Emerald Glow Green in addition to Emerald Lake Green, Galaxy Black, and Glacier White.

Details about pricing and availability for these new devices have yet to be announced, but further updates are anticipated soon.
