Burnley’s Scott Parker Contemplates Hannibal Mejbri’s Involvement Amid Ongoing Investigation
As the fifth round of the FA Cup approaches, Burnley head coach Scott Parker faces a significant decision regarding the participation of Hannibal Mejbri in the crucial match against Preston. This situation arises in the wake of an incident involving alleged racial abuse during a previous Championship match.
Hannibal, a former player for Manchester United, recently made headlines when he reported having experienced “disgusting abuse” following the Championship match on February 15, which ended in a 0-0 draw. The complaint involves an alleged racist comment made by Preston’s Milutin Osmajic. In response, Preston has acknowledged the complaint and noted that Osmajic has “strongly refuted the claims.” The Football Association (FA) is actively investigating the matter.
During a press conference, Parker emphasized the importance of protecting his player, while also considering the ramifications of excluding him from the upcoming cup tie. “There’s two phases to this,” Parker stated. “On one hand, I want to ensure Hannibal’s well-being, so I don’t want to put him in a difficult situation. However, on the other hand, we must ask why he should miss out.” He indicated that a decision would be made based on discussions with Hannibal, aiming to find a balance that prioritizes his comfort and safety.
Parker highlighted that it is still early to make a definitive choice on Hannibal’s involvement but indicated that conversations would take place leading up to the match. “Tomorrow [Friday] morning, I’ll have those conversations to determine the best course of action,” he said.
Ongoing Investigation and Statements
When pressed for updates regarding the ongoing investigation, Parker mentioned that there had been no new developments at that time. “The investigation is still in progress, and we haven’t received any information about its current status,” he noted.
In a statement following the alleged incident, Hannibal took to social media platform X, expressing his resolve to speak out against racism. “I will not be silent about what happened today. I will always call out racism whenever I hear or see it. That is the only way we can change as a sport and society,” he wrote, emphasizing that such abuse should not be tolerated in football.
Preston North End also issued a statement acknowledging the complaint made by Hannibal and Burnley regarding Osmajic’s alleged remark. They expressed appreciation for how match officials handled the situation and committed to cooperating with the FA’s investigation. “Milutin Osmajic has strongly refuted the claims made against him,” the club said, reinforcing its support for a thorough investigative process.
As the matter unfolds, all eyes will be on Burnley’s decision regarding Hannibal’s participation in the forthcoming match, showcasing the sensitive intersection of sport and the crucial fight against racism.
