Hansal Mehta has earned recognition as one of Bollywood’s most prominent directors, known for his candid views on cinema shared through various platforms. Upon the release of Taapsee Pannu’s film Thappad, Mehta publicly celebrated its compelling narrative, stating that it profoundly affected him. In a heartfelt blog post, he took the opportunity to apologize to women for any oversight in his past behaviors. Recently, he elaborated on the reasons behind his apology and the film’s personal significance to him.

During an interview with The Indian Express, Mehta revealed how Thappad prompted deep reflection and reconsideration of perspectives he had previously taken for granted. He remarked, “I wouldn’t have apologized to my ex-wife under normal circumstances, yet here I was, moved by the film.” He described the narrative as incredibly impactful, commenting that the power of cinema lies in its ability to evoke such personal revelations. Interestingly, he shared that he rarely revisits his writings, resulting in blog entries that may contain grammatical errors due to their spontaneous nature.

Mehta’s discussion covered not only Thappad’s storyline but also director Anubhav Sinha’s vision. He concluded his reflections by addressing the women in his life, extending apologies to his wife, mother, sister, daughters, ex-wife, and past partners. He acknowledged that while the timing of his apology may seem delayed, he believed that it’s never too late to express regret. “Sorry if I have let my sense of entitlement stifle your growth. Sorry if I have let my patriarchal conditioning render me insensitive to your needs. Sorry if I’ve been an asshole. I will try to change. If I don’t, SLAP me. Kheench ke maarna mujhe Thappad,” he proclaimed, highlighting his commitment to personal growth.

The narrative of Thappad centers on a couple facing turmoil after Vikram Sabharwal’s (played by Parvail Gulati) workplace disappointment leads to a moment of violence against his wife (Taapsee Pannu). The film addresses crucial themes such as respect in relationships, emotional dynamics in marriage, and the often-marginalized discussion of domestic abuse, shedding light on issues that society frequently overlooks due to traditional gender norms.
