The estate of renowned author Harper Lee has authorized the publication of a new collection titled The Land of Sweet Forever: Stories and Essays, acquired by Harper president and publisher Jonathan Burnham. This compilation, set for release on October 21, features a selection of previously unpublished short stories alongside essays from Lee’s literary career. Notably, it has been assembled with the collaboration of Tonja Carter, executor of the Harper Lee Estate, and Michael Dean from Andrew Nurnberg Associates, the estate’s UK representatives.
This collection includes eight short stories that were penned before Lee focused her efforts on the iconic To Kill a Mockingbird. These works reflect her early literary endeavors as she sought publication in various journals and periodicals. The original typescripts of these stories were found among the belongings Lee left behind in her New York apartment after her passing in 2016. In a significant move, the estate has chosen to share these early narratives alongside eight nonfiction pieces that Lee wrote between 1961 and 2006—marking their debut in a single volume.
The Land of Sweet Forever will also see international releases, with Hutchinson Heinemann, part of Penguin Random House UK, handling the publication in the U.K. and Commonwealth. Additional editions will be released in Denmark by Lindhardt og Ringhof, in Germany by Penguin Verlag, and in Italy by Giangiacomo Feltrinelli Editore. Details for further territories are expected to be announced shortly.
