Jaipur BookMark Conference to Highlight Global and Local Publishing Trends
The upcoming 12th annual Jaipur BookMark conference is set to draw the attention of the literary world as HarperCollins CEO Brian Murray takes the stage as a prominent speaker. The event will unfold from January 30 to February 3 at Hotel Clarks Amer in Jaipur, India, with Murray contributing to a session titled “Scanning the Horizon.”
Occurring alongside the renowned Jaipur Literature Festival, this five-day event will emphasize important themes such as translations and rights sales within the publishing landscape. Nobel Prize-winning economist Esther Duflo, known for her work Poor Economics for Kids, illustrated by Cheyenne Olivier, will kick off the conference with an enlightening session called “Green Shoots of Big Ideas,” which aims to introduce economic concepts to younger audiences.
This year, the spotlight will be on Tamil publishing, featuring a keynote address by esteemed scholar A.R. Venkatachalapathy, alongside sessions commemorating the 30th anniversary of Kalachuvadu Publications. Additionally, the program will delve into modern topics including artificial intelligence, narratives in gaming, and the importance of inclusivity in children’s publishing. According to Jaipur BookMark director Namita Gokhale, the event seeks to address “both local and global themes within the publishing ecosystem.”
A highlight of the conference will be the annual Rights Catalogue, showcasing an impressive collection of 58 titles from 31 Indian publishers in ten different languages.
Continuing its long-standing partnership, the Royal Norwegian Embassy will serve as the Country Partner for this year’s event. Ambassador May-Elin Stener noted, “Norway has been the Country Partner at Jaipur BookMark since its inception more than a decade ago. JBM’s commitment to the publishing industry and translations is vital for literature’s progress.”
Meanwhile, the Jaipur Literature Festival promises to be a grand affair, featuring over 300 speakers, including notable U.S. authors such as André Aciman and Benjamin Moser. The festival will span five days and include live music performances and a dedicated bookshop showcasing works from participating authors.
