HarperCollins Germany has announced its acquisition of Gräfe und Unzer, a notable publisher renowned for its guidebooks in Germany.
This strategic move is set to significantly enhance HarperCollins’ presence in the German market, more than doubling its operational scale. With this acquisition, the company aims to bolster its offerings across various genres, particularly in cookbooks, health and wellness literature, gardening guides, and travel books. Currently, HarperCollins Germany is responsible for the publication of around 300 titles each year.
Brian Murray, the president and CEO of HarperCollins Publishers, emphasized the critical nature of this expansion in the German landscape. He stated, “Germany stands as one of the most robust markets in our international portfolio, presenting vast opportunities for growth. This acquisition not only increases our market share but also positions us effectively for further development.”
Juergen Welte, managing director at HarperCollins Germany, praised the rich legacy of Gräfe und Unzer, noting, “This publisher boasts an impressive history with exceptional literary contributions. It has established itself as a trusted brand among generations of readers, reflecting deep-rooted values in quality publishing.”
Established in 1722, Gräfe und Unzer has a long-standing reputation and has been associated with the Ganske publishing group since 1990. The acquisition is currently pending review and approval from Germany’s antitrust regulators.
