Kamala Harris Outpaces Donald Trump in August Fundraising
In a remarkable display of grassroots support, Kamala Harris’s campaign reported raising $361 million in August, outstripping Donald Trump’s campaign, which raised $130 million during the same period, according to the Associated Press. This surge in contributions has been described by Harris’s campaign as the most successful grassroots fundraising month in the history of presidential elections.
With approximately 60 days remaining until the 2024 presidential election, Harris has taken on the mantle of the Democratic party’s nominee following President Joe Biden’s exit from the race in July. Her campaign emphasized that nearly 3 million people contributed to her fundraising efforts, marking a significant moment of engagement from the electorate, particularly through small donations, cited by AP.
The fundraising figures reflect an upward trend for Harris’s campaign, which raised $310 million in July, while Trump’s campaign saw a decrease with $138.7 million collected during the same month. Harris’s campaign manager, Julie Chávez Rodríguez, stated, “In just a short time, Vice-President Harris’s candidacy has galvanized a history-making, broad and diverse coalition – with the type of enthusiasm, energy, and grit that wins close elections.” She emphasized the campaign’s focus on translating financial support into voter engagement.
By the end of August, Harris held a considerable financial advantage over Trump, with her campaign reporting $404 million in cash on hand compared to Trump’s $285 million across various entities, according to the New York Times. The fundraising success in August aligns closely with the $364 million raised by Biden’s campaign during the equivalent timeframe in 2020.
Since Biden’s withdrawal and Harris’s campaign launch, the team has collectively raised over $615 million, underscoring a robust financial foundation as the election approaches.
While the reported figures provide insight into each campaign’s financial landscape, they may be subject to adjustments as net filings will be made public later this month by the Federal Election Commission. The latest developments come as various polls indicate that Harris is maintaining a narrow lead over Trump on a national scale.
