UPDATE (April 28): PBS’ Great Performances, Michael Price, New 42, and The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts are being honored with the 2025 Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theatre. These honors, initiated in 1990, celebrate remarkable contributions in the theatrical realm that don’t fall under the traditional Tony Award categories, recognizing individuals, organizations, and institutions for their exceptional achievements.
PREVIOUSLY (April 24): Renowned actor and writer Harvey Fierstein is set to receive the 2025 Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre during the 78th annual Tony Awards. This year’s ceremony will feature first-time host Cynthia Erivo and is scheduled for broadcast on June 8 from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET on CBS, as well as streaming live on Paramount+ in the U.S.
Fierstein boasts an impressive resume with four Tony Awards to his name: two for Torch Song Trilogy (best play and best actor), one for La Cage Aux Folles (best book of a musical), and another for Hairspray (best actor in a musical). Additionally, he penned the Tony-winning musical Kinky Boots. His Broadway contributions also include notable works such as Newsies, Legs Diamond, and a revised version of Funny Girl, which enjoyed considerable success on Broadway following its debut in London.
Previous recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award include esteemed figures such as Carol Channing, Graciela Daniele, Joel Gray, Jane Greenwood, Sheldon Harnick, and many more who have significantly impacted the theatrical landscape.
At 72, Fierstein has also received broader recognition, including a Primetime Emmy nomination in 1992 for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series for his memorable cameo on Cheers.
This year’s Tony Awards will return to Radio City Music Hall in New York City, marking the venue’s first hosting of the event in three years. The nominations are set to be revealed on May 1 at 9 a.m. ET, live-streamed on the Tony Awards’ YouTube page.
The production of the Tony Awards is a collaborative effort involving Tony Award Productions, a partnership between the American Theatre Wing and The Broadway League, along with White Cherry Entertainment. Executive producers and showrunners Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss will lead the team, with Weiss taking on the directorial role.
A limited number of tickets for the event are currently on sale to the general public, starting at $595 for seating in the second and third mezzanines. Tickets can be purchased through the Tony Awards’ website and Ticketmaster. Please note that there is a six-ticket limit per purchase, and all sales are final, subject to Ticketmaster service charges.
