Hayley Erbert Hough Shares Insights After Medical Emergency
Hayley Erbert Hough has recently opened up about her life and health journey following a significant medical emergency.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the 30-year-old dancer discussed prioritizing her health after undergoing emergency surgery in December 2023.
“I just listen to my body,” Hayley remarked, sharing the stage with her husband, Derek Hough, as they prepared for their upcoming holiday performance, Derek Hough: Dance for the Holidays. “As a dancer, I’ve cultivated a strong awareness of my body.”
She further expressed that she still has a dedicated medical team supporting her recovery process.
Hayley’s surgery was prompted by a serious condition known as a cranial hematoma, which involves the accumulation of blood within the skull. She underwent an emergency craniectomy due to the severity of her condition.
Derek, aged 39, shared his feelings about Hayley’s return to dancing. He admitted to ET, “I’m often the nervous one, asking, ‘Are you sure? Do we need to do this?’”
“It’s true, I’ve got a bit of anxiety when it comes to her performing,” Hayley replied. Derek added, “I usually urge her to play it safe while she reassures me, ‘Babe, I’ve got this.’”
The couple was in the midst of their Symphony of Dance tour in Washington, D.C., when Hayley was hospitalized for a brain bleed.
Earlier this month, Derek reminisced about the incident when Hayley had to be rushed to the hospital, recalling that she was still in her dance attire when it happened. She made a heartfelt comeback to the Dancing with the Stars stage on October 15, delivering an emotional performance with Derek.
“In an instant, everything came crashing down in an incredibly frightening manner,” Derek recounted during a segment on the ABC show. “I was on stage awaiting her entrance when the stage manager informed me that she wouldn’t be coming out. She was having severe seizures offstage.”
He continued, “We rushed her to the hospital, and the doctor conveyed the urgency of the situation: she had a severe brain bleed that required immediate surgery. He warned me she might not survive, and even if she did, she might not be the same person.”
Derek and Hayley plan to delve deeper into their experiences in an upcoming documentary scheduled for release in 2025.
“Jason Bergh, an award-winning filmmaker, joined us during this difficult time,” Derek shared with ET. “He chronicled our hospital visits and travels, capturing the profound journey we experienced—it’s truly powerful and remarkable.”
