Healing the Bald Eagle’s Beak After Gunshot Injury

A male bald eagle, identified as Bald Eagle 390, is showing promising signs of recovery after a severe injury suspected to be caused by a gunshot in July. After nearly nine months and multiple surgeries at the World Bird Sanctuary in Missouri, the bird is beginning to exhibit keratin growth on its injured beak.

The organization stated on Facebook that although the growth on the beak does not ensure full recovery, it provides optimism for spreading keratin over the affected area.

The Journey of Bald Eagle 390

Discovered injured by the roadside near Vienna, Missouri, on July 11, 2024, Bald Eagle 390 suffered significant beak damage. An investigation into the injury revealed a potential gunshot wound, as noted by Kira Klebe, the Rehabilitation Director at the sanctuary.

Upon arrival at the sanctuary, the eagle underwent a thorough examination and immediate surgery, where veterinary professionals secured the damaged beak with metal pins.

The beak and talons of eagles are primarily composed of keratin, the same protein found in human nails. One of the most significant challenges during the recovery has been ensuring that the keratin grows back adequately over the damaged areas.

“Injuries from gunshots can carry the risk of infection and complications that are typically not associated with other types of injuries,” Klebe pointed out.

To date, Bald Eagle 390 has gone through eight surgeries and numerous treatments to keep the area clean and reduce infection risks. A dental acrylic cover was used to protect the healing bone structure throughout the recovery process.

Strategies for Healing

The process of encouraging keratin growth closely resembles promoting nail growth in humans. Klebe emphasized the importance of a balanced diet and a low-stress environment for the eagle’s recovery. This involves providing high-quality nutrition and minimizing stress-related factors. Bald Eagle 390 has been receiving tailored vitamin and calcium supplements to enhance overall health.

On April 5, the sanctuary announced encouraging news: keratin began to sprout on the right side of 390’s beak. While this initial growth is promising, the team continues to monitor its development closely, with plans to ensure the keratin achieves a natural appearance as it continues to grow.

Future Prospects for Bald Eagle 390

Since February, 390 has been housed in a spacious rehabilitation aviary, providing a peaceful setting that aids in his recovery. Interaction with other eagles is permitted, but human contact is limited to reduce stress.

With the bone structure repaired and keratin growth underway, the sanctuary staff is committed to closely monitoring 390’s condition. Nevertheless, they remain realistic, estimating that it could take another year for the eagle to fully recover before being ready for release into the wild.

Helping Injured Birds

Audubon New York advises that if you encounter an injured bird, it is important to handle it gently. Placing the bird in a closed cardboard box lined with a towel can keep it safe and minimize stress while awaiting help from local animal control or bird rehabilitation services.

For those interested in supporting wildlife, organizations like Wildlife International provide directories of local bird rehabilitators who can assist injured birds.
