Henry Golding Reflects on Growth Since A Simple Favor Ahead of Another Simple Favor Release
Henry Golding has experienced significant changes in both his personal and professional life since the release of A Simple Favor in 2018, paralleling the development of his character, Sean.
The 38-year-old actor appeared on the Today show to discuss his role in the upcoming sequel, Another Simple Favor. The film reunites him with director Paul Feig and co-stars Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively.
In his conversation with hosts Al Roker, Dylan Dreyer, and Craig Melvin, Golding described his character, Sean, as the figure caught between Lively’s Emily and Kendrick’s Stephanie. He noted, “In the first film, he was just a punching bag, absorbing all the hits.”
However, in the new film, Sean has evolved. “The character returning this time has had several years to reflect and grow,” Golding explained. “He’s grappling with his past and has lost some inhibitions, choosing to be more assertive.”
Golding expressed his enthusiasm for collaborating again with Feig, stating, “I had a blast working with Paul. I proposed an idea to flip Sean’s character dynamic and create something fresh, and Paul was all in on that.”
Reflecting on his return to the project, Golding shared, “This was my second film after Crazy Rich Asians, and at that time, I was still finding my footing. Now, with more experience under my belt, I feel more confident in contributing creatively to the process.”
He also commented on the camaraderie he shares with Kendrick and Lively, likening it to “slipping into a comfortable pair of shoes.” Golding remarked on the ease of reconnecting and continuing their dynamic onscreen. “You bypass the initial nerves of working with new people and dive right back into the established relationships.”
Kendrick portrays Stephanie Smothers, a blogger who becomes entangled in a friendship with Lively’s character, Emily, sparked by their children’s school connection. The first film intricately explores Stephanie’s quest to uncover the truth behind Emily’s mysterious disappearance, leading to dramatic twists.
In the sequel, Emily, fresh out of prison, invites Stephanie to her opulent wedding in Italy, setting the stage for more unexpected developments.
At a special screening in New York City, director Paul Feig praised the on-screen chemistry between Kendrick and Lively: “Their ability to connect in these scenes is truly remarkable. We were filming a scene in a pool when it became evident just how naturally they interact.”
Feig highlighted the effortless magic they create together, adding, “It’s something that shows through the lens; their chemistry is palpable.”
Another Simple Favor is set to be available for streaming on Prime Video starting May 1.
