Weather Shift in Southern California: Rain and Snow Expected
LOS ANGELES – A substantial weather change is anticipated in Southern California, signaling a shift in conditions including the prospect of rain. Meteorologists are forecasting the arrival of a low pressure system, which is expected to lead to measurable precipitation in the coming days.
As this weather system moves in on Saturday, the region could see between a tenth and a half inch of rain across various areas through Sunday. The National Weather Service indicated that certain locations may receive even greater amounts.
“Local amounts up to one inch are possible across south-facing slopes of the San Gabriel Mountains,” the agency reported, and noted that there is also a possibility for thunderstorms to develop during this period.
The incoming low pressure system is also projected to bring snow to higher elevations, a positive development for ski resorts that have been grappling with below-average snowfall this season. The forecast suggests snowfall between two to five inches above the 5,000-foot level, with local totals potentially reaching 10 inches in resort areas.
Despite the much-needed precipitation, there are growing concerns regarding the impact on areas recently affected by wildfires, particularly the Palisades and Eaton burn scars. Officials are particularly cautious as heavy rainfall can trigger mudslides, posing risks of further damage in these vulnerable regions.
During a news briefing, Mark Pestrella, the Director of Los Angeles County Public Works, outlined the agency’s response strategies to mitigate potential hazards. “As the rain approaches L.A. County, Public Works will mobilize 24/7 storm patrols. All flood control dams and channels have been prepared,” he clarified.
Pestrella described the deployment of concrete barriers, commonly referred to as “K-rails,” intended to redirect potential debris flows caused by the rains. Additionally, crews are actively filling sandbags to assist businesses and residents in at-risk areas impacted by previous fires.
“Our objective in this incident is to protect the public, property, and the natural environment,” he stated, underscoring the importance of community safety during adverse weather conditions.
Weather predictions indicate that Southern California’s immediate future will be marked by these significant changes, with officials and residents alike hoping that the much-anticipated rain will manage to nourish the region while minimizing the risks posed by the landscape’s changing conditions.
