Tango Gameworks Rescued by KRAFTON Following Microsoft Closure
Hi-Fi Rush’s developer, Tango Gameworks, has found new life under the ownership of KRAFTON, the company best known for publishing PUBG. This acquisition follows the shocking announcement of Tango’s closure by Microsoft, allowing the studio to continue its work and creative endeavors.
On May 8, 2024, Tango Gameworks revealed that due to Microsoft’s corporate restructuring, not only had they decided to shut down Tango but also Arcane Austin and Alpha Dog Games. This corporate move sent ripples through the gaming community, particularly affecting fans of Tango Gameworks, who had celebrated the studio’s latest release, Hi-Fi Rush, a rhythm-based adventure game that had garnered critical acclaim despite its unconventional launch strategy.
Months after the unsettling news, KRAFTON stepped in to acquire Tango Gameworks, effectively safeguarding the studio from impending closure. The announcement coincided with KRAFTON’s strategy to strengthen its presence in the Japanese gaming market through this significant investment.
KRAFTON’s official statement emphasized their commitment to a seamless transition for Tango Gameworks. “As part of this strategic agreement, KRAFTON intends to collaborate with Xbox and ZeniMax to ensure a smooth transition and maintain continuity at Tango Gameworks,” the statement outlined. This collaboration indicates a proactive approach to preserving Tango’s operations and creative direction.
Moreover, KRAFTON expressed intentions to support Tango in continuing the development of the Hi-Fi Rush intellectual property and exploring new projects. This may hint at a potential sequel or expansion related to Hi-Fi Rush, reassuring fans that their beloved franchise may continue to thrive.
In addition, all of Tango Gameworks’ existing titles—including The Evil Within series, Ghostwire: Tokyo, and Hi-Fi Rush—will remain accessible across all platforms, including game stores and Xbox Game Pass, assuring fans they can continue to experience these titles.
John Johanas, the Creative Director and Director of Hi-Fi Rush, responded positively to the acquisition news, sharing his enthusiasm with fans by stating, “…and this is how it continues. We’re back, baby!” This sentiment reflects a renewed hope for the studio’s future and the excitement surrounding upcoming projects.
