New Features on iOS 18.5’s Native Mail App
The recent beta versions of iOS 18.5 may not reveal groundbreaking updates for users, but they do introduce some noteworthy enhancements to the built-in Mail app that could significantly improve user experience. One of the standout features in this upcoming update is the option to disable Contact Photos within the Mail app.
This new functionality allows users to bypass the previous method of accessing Settings to remove Contact Photos, leading to a more streamlined process. Users will appreciate the ease and speed of making this adjustment directly within the Mail app itself.
What’s New in the Mail App
In addition to the Contact Photos feature, the iOS 18.5 beta has unveiled a previously concealed option known as the All Mail view. Observers of previous versions, such as iOS 18.4, noted that the Mail inbox consisted of four distinct categories:
- Primary (in Blue)
- Transactions (in Green)
- Updates (in Dark Purple)
- Promotions (in Bright Orange)
However, to access the All Mail view, users had to swipe left across these categories. This option will now be plainly visible as the fifth category, with easy access located to the right of the Promotions tab in the latest beta versions.
Why All Mail Matters
The visibility of the All Mail tab is welcomed by users, particularly those who prefer to see all received emails, regardless of their categorization. The decision to previously keep this option under wraps remains puzzling, as it clearly provides enhanced functionality for the Mail app.
For users who may have removed the native Mail app from their iPhones, it’s readily available for download from the App Store. You can access it here.
One unique aspect of using the iOS Mail app is the distinct “Swoosh” sound that accompanies out-going emails. To ensure this sound is enabled, users can navigate to Settings > Sounds & Haptics, scrolling to the “Sent Mail” option to set it to “Swoosh.” This auditory feedback can add a bit of satisfaction with every email sent, enhancing the overall user experience.
Final Thoughts
While iOS 18.5 may not deliver a radical transformation for users, the enhancements to the Mail app—especially the new options for managing Contact Photos and uncovering the All Mail view—are certainly steps in the right direction. These updates illustrate Apple’s ongoing commitment to refining user experience in its applications.
