Robert Crimo III, the individual responsible for the mass shooting during the 2022 Highland Park Fourth of July Parade, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on Thursday. This decision was reached after two days of emotional testimonies and victim statements presented in the courtroom.
During the sentencing, Judge Victoria Rossetti imposed seven consecutive life sentences for the murder convictions alongside an additional 50 years for each of the 48 attempted murder charges. Crimo was absent from the courtroom when the sentence was delivered; a brief recess occurred due to an unrelated incident involving him at the jail. Following the 45-minute recess, Crimo chose not to attend the proceedings, allowing the sentencing to proceed without him.
In the days leading up to the sentencing, survivors and their families filled the courtroom to recount the traumatic events of that fateful day. Testimonies were shared by first responders, and a survivor addressed the court on behalf of her late husband. Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart also provided a closing statement, emphasizing the profound impact the shooting had on the Highland Park community.
Last month, Crimo entered a guilty plea to 21 counts of first-degree murder and 48 counts of attempted first-degree murder, just moments before his trial was set to begin.
The tragic incident resulted in the deaths of seven individuals, including Katherine Goldstein (64), Irina McCarthy (35), Kevin McCarthy (37), Jacquelyn Sundheim (63), Stephen Straus (88), Nicolas Toledo-Zaragoza (78), and Eduardo Uvaldo (69). Additionally, 48 others were injured, one of whom, an eight-year-old boy named Cooper Roberts, was left paralyzed from the waist down.
Absence from Sentencing Hearing
Crimo was informed multiple times that his sentencing would proceed with or without his presence, yet he opted not to attend. This absence did not deter survivors and witnesses from sharing their harrowing experiences in front of the court.
Retired Highland Park Police Commander Gerry Cameron, who responded to the scene and led the investigation, testified about his firsthand experience transporting three victims to the hospital amidst the chaos following the shooting that claimed seven lives and injured many others. Dana Ruder Ring, a Highland Park resident who attended the parade with her husband and three children, also shared her story.
Throughout the trial process, Crimo frequently failed to attend court sessions, demonstrating a pattern of avoidance leading up to his guilty plea. During the jury selection phase, he was only present for parts of the first two days and was absent entirely on the last day.
