The Solution:

Today’s Wordle

Analyzing Wordle Success

Daily, I utilize the Wordle Bot to evaluate my guessing strategies. You can analyze your own plays using the Wordle Bot right here.

Today, I opened strong with the word DRAIN. Fortune favored me, as it left only four possibilities, and I had three correct letters, though two were placed incorrectly. My subsequent guess, DIRTY, further narrowed it down to the final word: DIRGE! Victory achieved!

Competitive Wordle Scoring

Today’s Wordle Bot

Scoring is straightforward: 1 point for guessing in three tries and an additional point for defeating the Bot. With 2XP Friday bonuses, I totalled 4 points today. The Bot, however, guessed in four tries, receiving a total of -2 points. Thus, our score totals for April stand at:

My Score: 9 points

Wordle Bot Score: 10 points

As the scores indicate, it’s a tight race with just under two weeks remaining in the month. The competition remains fierce!

Playing Competitive Wordle

The points system for guessing is as follows: 3 points for a correct guess in 1 attempt, 2 points for 2 attempts, 1 point for 3 attempts, 0 points for 4 attempts, -1 for 5 attempts, -2 for 6 attempts, and -3 for not guessing correctly at all. When competing against another player, you earn an additional point for winning, none for a tie, and lose a point for a loss. Players can choose to keep a running total or reset daily, and Fridays offer a double points opportunity for all scores.

Etymology of Today’s Word

The term dirge has its roots in the Latin word dirige, which translates to “direct” or “guide.” This word comes from the opening of a Latin antiphon found in the medieval Christian Office for the Dead: Dirige, Domine, Deus meus, in conspectu tuo viam meam (“Direct, O Lord, my God, my way in thy sight”). Over time, dirge evolved to signify a lamentation or funeral song.
