HMD and Lava Announce Direct-to-Mobile Phones Ahead of WAVES 2025
On Monday, HMD revealed its plans to introduce Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) phones in collaboration with FreeStream Technologies and additional partners. This announcement comes just before the World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025, set to commence on May 1. Lava International, an Indian original equipment manufacturer (OEM), is also preparing to launch D2M feature phones in India, with several key features already hinted at by the company. Field trials for the D2M technology are expected to begin in India shortly.
Collaborative Efforts for D2M Phones
HMD has joined forces with FreeStream Technologies, Tejas Networks, and Sinclair to unveil the D2M phones during the WAVES 2025 event at the Jio World Centre in Mumbai, according to their press release.
Lava’s in-house research and development team, in partnership with Tejas Networks, has created a feature phone powered by the MediaTek MT6261 system-on-chip (SoC) integrated with Saankhya’s SL3000 chip. The device will feature a UHF antenna for television reception, GSM capabilities for voice calls, a 2.8-inch QVGA display, and a robust 2,200mAh battery.
D2M technology is being described as a cutting-edge broadcasting solution that enables over-the-top (OTT) content, live television, video, audio, and text messages to be delivered directly to mobile phones without the need for Wi-Fi or internet access. This partnership aligns with India’s ‘Make in India’ and ‘Design in India’ initiatives. Extensive field trials for this technology are set to begin soon.
HMD also indicated that the forthcoming devices will include affordable feature phones, smartphones, and tablets powered by Tejas Networks. The technology has undergone rigorous testing in real-world environments by Prasar Bharati, in collaboration with IIT Kanpur and Tejas Networks.
According to Parag Naik, Executive Vice President of Tejas Networks, the new HMD D2M phones will utilize Saankhya Labs’ SL-3000 chipset. These devices are designed to offer a core network platform that facilitates targeted advertising, content delivery network (CDN) offloading, educational resources, emergency alerts, and more.
Sinclair Inc., an American telecommunications company, stated that these phones will incorporate ATSC 3.0 technology, recognized as the next generation of digital terrestrial television broadcasting standards. Sinclair is reportedly developing “the next version, Broadcast to Everything (B2X) technology,” with an eye on the impending demands of 6G technology.
