Holly Robinson Peete Reflects on Son RJ’s Journey with Autism

Holly Robinson Peete recently provided an inspiring update on her son, RJ, highlighting his remarkable achievements amidst the challenges of autism. The actress shared her thoughts during the Lexus UPTOWN Honors Hollywood event on February 26 in Hollywood, California.

Reflecting on RJ’s early diagnosis at three years old, Robinson Peete expressed the profound joy she feels watching him thrive against the odds. “When I think about what he was told he would never achieve, I am overwhelmed with gratitude. We refer to that time as the ‘never day,'” she explained, her emotions clearly evident.

Fast-forwarding to 2024, she proudly mentioned RJ’s recent accomplishment of receiving a second World Series ring with the Los Angeles Dodgers, an organization he has been a part of since 2016. “Now, entering his tenth season, it’s truly a testament to perseverance and faith,” Robinson Peete noted, emphasizing her belief that God has played a significant role in RJ’s journey.

During the conversation, Robinson Peete identified finding RJ’s passion as a key turning point in his life. “This journey with autism has taken us on a wild ride—what I like to call the autism express,” she said. “Securing a job with the Dodgers at 18 was a transformative moment for him, marking a shift not only in his career but in his self-confidence.” She highlighted the importance of stable employment for individuals with autism and shared that RJ’s ability to retain his job has been particularly impactful.

“Often, young adults with autism struggle to maintain employment due to a lack of support. It’s crucial they receive the encouragement they need,” she remarked. “I am incredibly grateful that the Dodgers have welcomed RJ into their family, offering him friendship, dignity, a paycheck, and the opportunity for self-advocacy.” This support has made a difference not only in RJ’s life but also in how he perceives himself and his abilities.

As a clubhouse attendant with the Dodgers, RJ has flourished since his hiring, which was inspired by an episode of the family’s reality television show, For Peete’s Sake. The show aimed to assist RJ in finding a job that would understand and celebrate his unique qualities.

In a recent interview with the LA Times, RJ shared, “Everyone here has my back, and they are always here for me no matter what. These are the best friends I’ve ever had. I love these guys and I love being around them. I look up to them.” His heartfelt words reflect the strong bond he shares with his colleagues, highlighting how vital a supportive community can be in the lives of those with autism.
