Challenges Ahead for Honda and Joan Mir in MotoGP
Honda is pinning its hopes on its lead rider, Joan Mir, to sustain his motivation as the company endeavors to develop a competitive motorcycle for the MotoGP series once again. The 2024 season proved to be particularly daunting for the Japanese manufacturer, culminating in what many consider its worst performance in the history of the premier class, finishing at the bottom of the standings with a mere 75 points.
During the season, Mir accumulated only 21 points aboard the factory RC213V, placing him 21st in the overall standings, just ahead of teammate Luca Marini. The duo was outperformed by LCR riders Johann Zarco and Takaaki Nakagami, further challenging HRC’s reputation in the highly competitive arena of MotoGP.
Team principal Alberto Puig acknowledged the difficulties Mir faces in this challenging environment, especially as he is a former world champion. There is a recognition that the current circumstances are far from ideal for Mir, who continues to strive for success despite the bike’s performance issues.
“Joan is already a world champion in MotoGP, so the current situation is not so comfortable for him,” Puig noted in an interview with the official MotoGP website. “The bike is not at the level he expects. He is trying hard, and while he has experienced some crashes, he remains determined to achieve favorable results, even when things aren’t aligning as hoped. I hope he can keep his motivation even in these challenging times.”
As the season progressed, Puig believed that the team began to find clarity in the bike’s development after experimenting extensively during the initial half of the year. An increased performance was evident starting from the second round in Misano, where Zarco managed to secure two top-10 finishes during the flyaway races across Asia.
Despite these small victories, Puig expressed that the overall results still fell short of their ambitious expectations. “It’s been a tough year, and clearly, the results are not what we desire,” Puig admitted. “During the first part of the season, we explored numerous options and solutions, and by the second half, we had a clearer understanding of what schemes could be effective. While there have been some improvements, we still haven’t achieved the results we are aiming for. However, from an engineering standpoint, our team is gaining more insight into how to advance effectively, which is crucial for our future endeavors.”
Reiterating Honda’s commitment to reclaim its position at the forefront of MotoGP, Puig stated, “The one thing we have never lost is our determination to return to prominence. It is this very will that propels us forward, even acknowledging our current setbacks.”
