Honor introduced its Magic V3 foldable smartphone last year, setting high expectations for the follow-up model, anticipated to be the Magic V4, which many expected to launch in 2025. However, a recent report from China suggests a twist in the narrative regarding this next-generation device.
The rumor indicates that Honor will indeed release a successor to the Magic V3 this year, but it will not carry the name Magic V4. Instead, the company appears to be bypassing the designation entirely, jumping directly to Magic V5. This decision reportedly stems from a cultural superstition known as tetraphobia, which leads to the avoidance of the number four due to its associations with bad luck.

Such naming strategies are not uncommon among Chinese tech firms. They often sidestep the number four in product names to prevent potential consumers from rejecting a device based on widespread cultural beliefs. This pattern can be observed with various companies that have chosen alternative naming conventions to avoid the stigma associated with the number.
The upcoming Magic V5 is expected to feature a sleek and ultra-thin design, though it remains to be seen if it will claim the title of “thinnest book-style foldable” surpassing competitors like the Oppo Find N5, another model that has also omitted the fourth generation in its naming. Li Kun, the Product Manager of Honor Devices, has officially stated that the unveiling of the Magic V5 is set for late May or early June, intensifying the anticipation surrounding its features and innovations.
