Remembering Loved Ones: The Bittersweet Elf Tradition
As Christmas approaches, many families welcome back the beloved Elf on the Shelf, an iconic tradition filled with creativity and joy. For numerous parents, this elf embodies the spirit of the season, serving as a playful reminder of the magic of Christmas. Yet, for some, it also becomes a poignant way to honor cherished memories. Emberly Wadsworth, a 29-year-old mother, exemplifies this by using the Elf on the Shelf to preserve the memory of her late son, Tatum, while creating joyful experiences for her daughter, Anna Grace, affectionately known as Gracie.
Tatum’s journey began under challenging circumstances; he was born a micro preemie, weighing just 1 lb., 5 oz. During Emberly’s pregnancy, Tatum faced serious health issues, including a diagnosis of Severe Intrauterine Growth Restriction. Emberly recalls praying for Tatum’s survival while he was still in the womb, hoping fervently to meet him. Born prematurely, he spent his short life battling numerous medical challenges, including Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia and hydrocephalus. Despite his struggles, Emberly describes Tatum as “resilient, patient, and strong.”
After months of medical intervention, the family faced a heartbreaking decision. On September 24, 2023, they chose to take Tatum off life support after being advised that further surgeries could be too perilous. While grappling with this immense loss, Emberly remained determined to foster a sense of wonder and magic for Gracie during the holiday season.
The notion of incorporating an Elf to remember Tatum surfaced unexpectedly while Emberly was shopping. She envisioned a unique twist to the conventional Elf on the Shelf narrative, deciding to give Gracie two elves this season: one for Gracie and the other representing Tatum’s spirit. “I always seek small ways to keep Tatum’s memory alive,” she said, expressing her desire to make this holiday one filled with remembrance and joy.
In a heartwarming TikTok video, which has garnered significant attention, Emberly poses a touching question: “What happens to your sibling’s elf when your brother is in heaven?” In the video, Gracie enters the kitchen to find that her elf has set up “Santa’s Workshop,” alongside a note explaining that, since Tatum is in heaven, an extra elf has been assigned to their home. This thoughtful narrative lets Gracie feel that Tatum is still a part of their celebrations, ensuring that the magic of the elves is shared across their family bond, both earthly and spiritual.
Reacting to her father reading the note, Gracie joyfully responds, “Beautiful!” showcasing a childlike wonder, even if she briefly worries about her candy. Emberly notes that this initiative therefore creates a special bond not just with Tatum’s memory but also enriches Gracie’s holiday experience. Despite the passing of her brother, Gracie frequently speaks of him and maintains dreams of having a sibling beside her.
Connecting the concepts of love, loss, and resilience, Emberly describes Tatum’s elf as a conduit of communication to the heavens. “She can fly to the North Pole and to heaven to send Tatum messages from Gracie,” Emberly explains. Gracie has formed a friendship with her elves, often confiding in them as if they were her closest allies. This creative approach enables the Wadsworth family to keep Tatum’s memory alive in a manner that feels tangible and present.
As Emberly works to cultivate joy amidst their grief, she reflects on the importance of making the holiday season enchanting for Gracie, stating, “I miss our Tatum every single day. So does my sweet husband and little Gracie! But, I keep that pain inside me because it’s important to me to make this holiday season magical.” In embracing the spirit of remembrance, the family demonstrates that love endures, providing hope and comfort during challenging times.
