What you need to know
Honor has unveiled an innovative feature set to debut with its upcoming MagicPad 2: “AI Formula Recognition”. This advanced AI software is designed to interpret the complexity of handwritten math equations and convert them into digital text. The official announcement for the tablet will take place at the IFA 2024 event, scheduled for September 5 in Berlin, Germany, starting at 2 pm CEST (8 am EST).
In a series of teasers leading up to the event, Honor demonstrated how its AI technology can assist with intricate mathematical problems.
Collaborating with YouTuber Patrick Jones, who operates the patrickJMT channel, Honor’s AI was challenged with several complex algebraic equations during a demo captured on the new MagicPad 2.
The company’s Formula Recognition functionality is positioned as a dual-purpose tool, benefiting both educators and students. Teachers can digitize handwritten notes for distribution, while students can enhance their studying with the ability to search and edit notes in a digital format.
During the demonstration, users could tap an icon to generate a dual text box, allowing them to highlight specific areas for digitization. Alternatively, users could manually input a formula to convert into digital text.
Throughout the demonstration, the AI effectively recognized an array of mathematical symbols and formulas, showcasing its capability in interpreting a spectrum of equations—from straightforward formulas like (2x + 3y = 8) to more complicated expressions that might challenge even seasoned mathematicians.
In one part of the demonstration, Patrick sought to determine the values of “X” and “Y”, culminating in the revelation that “X” equated to 9.05 and “Y” corresponded to 2024. While the math is noteworthy, the latter value coincides with the date of Honor’s IFA 2024 presentation in Berlin on September 5 at 2 pm CEST (8 am EST). For further insights into Honor’s AI capabilities in mathematics, interested viewers can watch Patrick Jones’ video, which also features a reference to renowned scientist Albert Einstein.

With the imminent IFA event, Honor has also hinted at what’s on the horizon. One highlight includes their latest foldable smartphones, notably thin models like the Magic V3 and Magic Vs3 that measure just 9.2mm when closed. The company has recently elaborated on its achievements in research and development, which have enabled this impressive sleekness through advanced silicon-carbon battery technology.
However, the spotlight in this presentation is undoubtedly the AI advancements. Earlier this year at MWC 2024, Honor introduced several AI features, including AI Defocus Eye Protection, aimed at reducing eye strain and potential myopia by softening peripheral vision.
