Dhiru is redefining Marathi pop, one groove at a time. In this exclusive interview, the composer behind viral hits like Gulabi Sadi and Taambdi Chaamdi talks about his latest genre-blending anthem Jevlis Ka?, blending retro funk, hyperpop, and Marathi soul into a fresh sound.
Composer Dhiru shares insights into his new Marathi pop anthem Jevlis Ka?, which incorporates elements of funk, hyperpop, and folk.
In Maharashtra, the love of food often transcends mere sustenance, as embodied in the phrase Jevlis Ka? — a simple inquiry infused with warmth, care, and a sense of nurturing. Dhiru ingeniously turns this everyday Marathi expression into a vibrant anthem, melding retro funk and hyperpop influences with the rich essence of Marathi culture.
Having transitioned from scoring impactful films like Uri and Article 15 to revolutionizing Marathi pop music, Dhiru demonstrates the flourishing spirit of independent music in regional languages. With Jevlis Ka?, he artfully combines nostalgia with modernity, elevating Marathi music to a platform that is both culturally significant and trendsetting.
In this exclusive interview, Dhiru takes us on a musical journey through Jevlis Ka?, discusses the readiness of Marathi pop for international recognition, and reveals what lies ahead in his constantly evolving artistic landscape. And while you ponder the question “Jevlis Ka?”, consider grabbing a bite before diving deeper into this engaging conversation!
Here are the excerpts:
The phrase ‘Jevlis Ka?’ is a humble yet powerful manifestation of care. What inspired you to create a song from it?
The phrase Jevlis Ka? resonated within me for quite some time—it came to me in a rhythmic, almost musical form. That’s when I realized its potential to serve as the backbone of a song. Despite its simplicity, it embodies warmth and care, making it universally relatable.
You aimed to craft something youthful and conversational. How did you achieve that balance in ‘Jevlis Ka’?
I structured the song around the catchy hook ‘Jevlis Ka’, infusing it with a retro funk groove and vibrant dance-pop energy to create a modern feel. The key was to ensure the lyrics flowed naturally, which Akshay Shinde executed brilliantly, capturing the essence of conversation.
From composition to production, I focused on maintaining the dynamic and youthful spirit while honoring Marathi traditions. Jevlis Ka? ultimately emerged as I envisioned: a fun, catchy, heartfelt tune that resonates with both nostalgia and a sense of novelty.
Given the rich legacy of Marathi music, how did you blend traditional sounds with contemporary hyperpop and retro funk?
Marathi music boasts a profound history, from the classic Abhangs to various folk traditions that echo the sentiments of their times. This cultural tapestry inspires me deeply. For Jevlis Ka?, I aimed to distill that essence for a modern audience—not to supplant tradition, but to build upon it, shaping a sound that is vibrant yet familiar.
Much like how historical musical forms adapted to their respective eras, I view my work as a reflection of today’s interconnected world. Our musical influences have expanded, allowing me to create a track that stays true to its Marathi roots while embracing global sounds. Jevlis Ka? embodies this synthesis.
Funk has always captivated me with its infectious grooves that beg for movement. I wanted Jevlis Ka? to radiate that energy while blending nostalgia and modernity—combining the disco vibe with the playful elements of hyperpop, resulting in something both familiar and exhilarating.
The song inherently exudes a bubblegum pop essence, apparent in its melodies and visual aesthetics. I feel that music can capture nostalgia while simultaneously embracing contemporary elements, and that’s what Jevlis Ka? symbolizes: a harmonious blend of warmth and freshness.
How does ‘Jevlis Ka’ mark a new chapter in your growth as an independent musician?
We are in a thrilling time for Marathi music. Artists are now transcending genre boundaries, embracing fresh global perspectives while retaining their cultural identities. While Marathi music has always been diverse, the emergence of independent artists on digital platforms fosters an exciting atmosphere for experimentation.
I perceive Jevlis Ka? as a playful yet forward-thinking contribution to this vibrant movement—a fusion of modern and traditional Marathi sound. Music has become increasingly transcendent of borders, reflecting diverse emotional landscapes. Other regional industries have embraced this evolution, and I desire for Marathi music to make its mark similarly.
Crafting Jevlis Ka? stemmed from a very personal motivation. If Marathi music is to resonate with urban youth—an important demographic in Maharashtra—it must offer something that feels both thrilling and familiar. I take great pride in our musical heritage and aim to reflect that in a context that also draws inspiration from contemporary influences.
Having composed for acclaimed films, how does the creative process differ when working on an independent single like ‘Jevlis Ka’?
Film music serves to advance a storyline, built on collaboration with directives from story and character arcs. In contrast, independent music offers limitless possibilities; it’s a deeply personal endeavor. With Jevlis Ka?, I had the freedom to shape my own sonic environment, requiring discipline to refine and finalize my creation.
Experimenting with hyperpop, retro funk, and dance-pop is unusual for Marathi music. What challenges did you encounter, and how did you address them?
While I didn’t encounter significant hurdles in composing the melody—since music transcends language—the lyrics posed a challenge. Funk relies on rhythmic vigor, compelling me to fit words seamlessly into punchy phrases. This is where Akshay’s lyrical prowess came into play, matching the lyrical flow with precision and energy.
With digital platforms empowering indie artists, do you view this as pivotal for Marathi pop’s global recognition?
Absolutely. The digital revolution has transformed the way artists and fans connect, removing reliance on traditional channels. Streaming platforms and social media allow diverse music to flourish globally, making this an auspicious moment for Marathi music.
Artists now possess the freedom to innovate, blending styles and narratives uniquely. This accessibility enables new music to reach broader audiences, presenting immense opportunities for creativity. I feel fortunate to be part of this landscape.
Other regional music industries have successfully embraced global trends while remaining grounded. What will it take for Marathi music to achieve similar mainstream success?
Every time an Indian song gains international acclaim, I am filled with pride. Our culture offers a wealth of creativity and artistry, and I believe our music is capable of resonating globally.
Marathi music has historically embraced evolution and experimentation. Despite a period of stagnation, we are now witnessing an invigorating resurgence, led by artists like Ajay-Atul and AV Prafullachandra, who are redefining the Marathi music scene.
Their groundbreaking contributions expand the possibilities for Marathi music, making it an exciting time for newcomers to explore innovative concepts. As audiences grow more receptive to diverse sounds, we are entering an era ripe for experimentation that honors traditional roots while exploring new sonic territories.
Can Marathi pop cultivate its own niche in the indie music scene, akin to K-pop and Latin pop overcoming language barriers?
Music transcends language, resonating first through rhythm and melody before lyrics come into play. People connect with the groove before comprehending the words, enabling enjoyment of music in other languages. Crafting a distinct sound that merges universal appeal with the richness of its origins is crucial for this endeavor.
Transitioning from your full name, Dhirendra Mulkalwar, to adopting ‘Dhiru’—does this signify a shift in your artistic persona?
Dhirendra Mulkalwar is my legal name, while Dhiru evokes a sense of warmth and familiarity, akin to home. Initially, my full name appeared in formal credits for projects, but for my independent music—especially in my native tongue—I wanted a name that resonated more personally. Dhiru encapsulates my identity and artistic essence.
Reflecting on your path from scoring films like ‘Uri’ and ‘Article 15’ to releasing your own singles, what has been your most fulfilling moment?
I feel privileged to have contributed to remarkable films and collaborated with visionary filmmakers. Witnessing my work on the big screen is a thrill that never dims. However, creating and sharing my own music—particularly in my mother tongue—is profoundly fulfilling. If I can help shape the direction of Marathi music, that is the pinnacle of accomplishment for me.
If you could collaborate with any artist, Indian or international, for your next project, who would it be and why?
I have a deep appreciation for folk artists, especially those from the Zhadi Patti tradition, as it is close to my heart. I aspire to present this heritage on a global stage. Internationally, artists like The Weeknd, Daft Punk, and Bruno Mars inspire me, and collaborating with them would be a dream come true.
‘Jevlis Ka’ presents a playful yet forward-thinking vibe. Can listeners anticipate more genre-blending experimentation in your future releases?
Without a doubt! I have several exciting songs prepared for release this year, each promising novel soundscapes and genre explorations. I thrive on pushing creative boundaries, so listeners can expect more adventurous experiments in the coming months. I am eager to share this musical journey with everyone!
What do you envision for the future of Marathi pop—will it evolve into a mainstream genre, or retain its indie charm?
I believe Marathi pop possesses the potential to gain mainstream traction. With one of India’s largest urban populations enjoying diverse music, the success of recent international artist performances highlights this shift.
I have long wished for vibrant contemporary pop music in Marathi; however, that space was limited for many years. Composing the music I want to hear fuels my creativity. Many young urban Marathi listeners share this sentiment, creating a dynamic environment for the burgeoning Marathi pop scene.
Ultimately, what message do you hope listeners take away from ‘Jevlis Ka’? What more can we anticipate from you?
Jevlis Ka? serves as a gentle reminder that expressions of love and care do not always require grand gestures. Sometimes it’s the simple question of “Jevlis Ka?” that conveys affection and concern. Although we may not always articulate our feelings openly, these subtle moments resonate profoundly.
Looking ahead, I have exciting songs lined up that promise to take listeners on vibrant sonic adventures. I’m thrilled to share them with the world!
