The Broadway phenomenon Wicked, which is being adapted into a film, continues to captivate audiences across various platforms. This production features notable performances from Ariana Grande as Glinda the Good Witch, distinguished by her vibrant pink attire, and Cynthia Erivo, who portrays Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, in a striking green complexion.
The Transformation of Cynthia Erivo
In the promotional trailer, Glinda cleverly highlights Elphaba’s vivid green skin, a transformation that requires considerable effort. Cynthia Erivo detailed the extensive makeup process during her appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, revealing that the time investment fluctuates based on the amount of body covered in green.
“For just head, hands, and neck, it takes about two hours and 45 minutes to three hours. If I include full arms and legs, we’re looking at around three and a half hours. When the transformation involves my entire body, it can take up to four and a half hours each morning,” she stated.
To enhance her character further, Erivo also donned prosthetic ears, a strategic choice given her nearly 30 piercings, saving her time by forgoing the removal of each earring pre-shoot.
While fans await the release of Wicked Part 2, which is set for next year, Erivo reflects on the lasting impact of her character. “I don’t know if I can leave Elphaba behind completely. She’s got a part of my heart,” she shared.
Mary Kate Morrissey’s De-Greening Routine
On Broadway, Mary Kate Morrissey embodies Elphaba, navigating the character’s green transformation and reversal multiple times each week. She recently showcased her de-greening routine in an insightful Instagram Reel.
During the video, Morrissey expressed her concerns about skin care while removing the makeup: “I do this every day, and I really don’t want to be pulling around my eyes.” She highlighted her go-to products, including Garnier All-In-One Waterproof Micellar Water and the Micellar Cleansing Eco Pads, which are essential for a thorough yet gentle removal of makeup. Despite her efforts, she humorously acknowledged that a faint green hairline often persists post-performance.
In this way, Morrissey, like Erivo, carries a piece of Elphaba with her, even after stepping off stage.
