As highlighted by Srinivas Mukkamala, chief product officer at Ivanti, the landscape of misinformation has evolved, making it increasingly difficult for individuals to discern genuine information from deceptive content. In the context of elections, these advancements pose significant challenges for voters seeking accurate information.

According to research from Gartner, 62% of CEOs and senior executives believe that deepfake technology will introduce additional operational costs and complexities within three years, while a small percentage (5%) see it as a critical threat to their organizations. Moreover, Gartner anticipates that by 2026, 30% of businesses will lose faith in facial biometrics as a reliable means of identity verification due to the rise of deepfake attacks.

Mukkamala pointed out that a concerning 54% of office workers are unaware that sophisticated AI can mimic anyone’s voice, raising alarms about misinformation leading up to upcoming elections.

The 2024 threat assessment by the U.S. Intelligence Community underscores that Russia is utilizing AI-generated deepfakes, aiming to deceive even seasoned experts. The assessment indicates that individuals in conflict zones or politically unstable regions face the highest risk from such manipulative tactics. In response to the rising threat, the Department of Homeland Security has issued guidance titled Increasing Threats of Deepfake Identities.

How GPT-4o is designed to detect deepfakes

The latest iteration from OpenAI, known as GPT-4o, is constructed specifically to combat the rising threats posed by deepfakes. This “autoregressive omni model” can process various types of input, including text, audio, images, and video, as detailed in its system card released on August 8. OpenAI emphasizes that the model operates only with selected voices and incorporates an output classifier to monitor potential deviations.

The architecture behind GPT-4o includes rigorous mechanisms designed to detect deepfake content across multiple modalities, supported by an extensive red teaming approach. Continuous training and adaptation to real-world attack data are vital for keeping pace with evolving deepfake technologies.

Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) detection. GPT-4o has the ability to detect synthetic content created using the same technologies that malicious actors exploit. The model can uncover subtle inconsistencies in content generation that even the GANs struggle to replicate fully, such as anomalies in lighting within videos or variations in vocal pitch over time. Another notable incident involved a Zoom call where multiple deepfake identities impersonated key figures, including the CFO. A finance employee at an international firm was reportedly deceived into authorizing a transfer of $25 million based on these impersonations.

In a recent Tech News Briefing with the Wall Street Journal, CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz discussed the advancements in AI that aid cybersecurity efforts while highlighting how attackers are similarly leveraging these technologies. Kurtz illustrated the potential dangers posed by deepfakes in the context of the 2024 U.S. elections.

“In 2024, with the ability to create deepfakes, some of our team members have even created spoof videos that were indistinguishable from me,” Kurtz noted to the WSJ. “This raises serious concerns, not only about infrastructure but also about how misleading narratives can be constructed to manipulate public behavior in favor of certain agendas.”
