Nathan Lane Discusses Bill Burr’s Role in Broadway’s “Glengarry Glen Ross” Revival
At the latest stop on the Mid-Century Modern press tour, Nathan Lane revealed his pivotal role in helping comedian Bill Burr secure the part of Dave Moss in the Broadway revival of Glengarry Glen Ross, which has just opened its doors at The Palace Theatre. Viewers can explore reviews of the show online.
During an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Lane shared how he was initially approached by playwright David Mamet and producer Jeffrye Richards to star as Shelley Levene in the revival. He remarked, “I was enthusiastic about participating, but I insisted that we needed an all-star cast to elevate this production into something remarkable. The first person that should be added to the roster is Bill Burr for the role of Dave Moss.”
Lane recalled the moment when Mamet and Richards admitted they were not acquainted with Burr’s comedic style. In response, he curated a selection of three video clips featuring Burr: a scene from The Mandalorian, a moment from The King of Staten Island, and a snippet of his stand-up routine. Ultimately, Burr was offered the role, even though Lane eventually had to step away from the production. For more insights, viewers can watch the full interview.
The new production of Glengarry Glen Ross stars a notable cast, including Kieran Culkin, recognized with multiple awards such as an Emmy and Golden Globe, as Richard Roma; Bob Odenkirk, also an Emmy winner and Golden Globe nominee, in the role of Shelley Levene, marking his Broadway debut; and Bill Burr bringing his talent to the stage as Dave Moss. Michael McKean, an Academy Award nominee and Grammy winner, takes on the character George Aaronow. The ensemble also includes Donald Webber Jr. as John Williamson, Howard W. Overshown as Baylen, and John Pirruccello, another performer making his Broadway debut, as James Lingk.
Based on Mamet’s Pulitzer Prize-winning drama, Glengarry Glen Ross delves into the cutthroat dynamics of a Chicago real estate office where four sales agents vie to sell nearly worthless properties to unsuspecting clients. The stakes are high: the best salesman walks away with a new car, while the underperformer is left jobless. This set-up creates a fiercely competitive atmosphere, exposing the lengths to which the characters will go to achieve success.
