The performance characteristics of the three distinct Polestar models are influenced more by their respective drivetrains and their capability to manage steering and throttle inputs, as well as the precision of sensor readings, rather than their outright power ratings.
The Polestar 3 appears to face the most challenges, likely due to a complex combination of factors including the integration of both front and rear motors, rear torque distribution, increased weight, and a higher center of gravity. According to Rydholm, who shared insights from the passenger seat, the accelerometers located centrally within the vehicles become crucial in low-traction situations. Here, the vehicles must accurately calibrate g-forces when engaging regenerative braking, particularly up to about 0.3 g, while allowing for more powerful outputs when the steering wheel remains straight.
Mastering the Drift
I quickly discovered that initiating drifts with momentum rather than fully pressing the accelerator proved to be a more effective technique. This approach was particularly advantageous for the Polestar 2, which is approximately 1,000 pounds (454 kg) lighter than its counterparts, the Polestar 3 and 4.
During our time on the ice, we were accompanied by a pair of experimental Polestar 2 prototypes designed for vehicle-to-load functionality. These innovative models powered an assortment of facilities, including huts, tipis, saunas, lighting, heating equipment, and even a kitchen setup. Additionally, we had the opportunity to take part in ride-along experiences in three Arctic Circle editions of the vehicles. Each was adorned with eye-catching graphics, enhanced racing seats, improved suspension, roof racks, and notably, tires equipped with 4-millimeter studs, reinforcing Polestar’s strong ties to the Scandinavian rally racing tradition.
While I have high hopes for a consumer version of the Arctic Circle lineup to be available soon, the standard Polestar models have already demonstrated that electric vehicles (EVs) can not only thrive but also deliver an exhilarating driving experience, even in some of the planet’s most extreme environments.
