Revelations About Princess Diana’s Unique Bond with Celebrities
Princess Diana often distinguished herself from the traditional expectations associated with her role in the British royal family. Amidst the pressures of her public life, she cultivated friendships with notable figures, including the late comedian Kenny Everett.
In a revealing interview marking 30 years since Everett’s death in April 1995, his close friend Cleo Rocos shared some intriguing anecdotes with the Mirror. Rocos recounted an extraordinary occasion in which Princess Diana sneaked into a gay bar alongside another iconic figure, Freddie Mercury, the legendary lead singer of Queen. Rocos pointed out that Everett was connected with prominent personalities like Diana and Mercury, often enjoying lunches with the princess, eager to exchange insights about each other’s worlds.
Rocos recalled how, after a typical lunch, Diana decided to join them at Everett’s home. “I went into the kitchen to make some more cocktails, and there was Diana without her shoes, dancing with Kenny to the Gypsy Kings,” Rocos described. As the evening unfolded, Everett reached out to Mercury, inviting him over to join the fun, while the group enjoyed a light-hearted viewing of ‘The Golden Girls.’
Diana’s presence was initially expected to be short-lived, yet she surprised everyone by expressing interest in their plans for a night out. Rocos described how Diana playfully took one of Everett’s jackets, which he had initially planned to wear himself, and quickly transformed into what everyone thought was a fabulous look. “She looked fantastic,” Rocos said, recalling how Diana donned a leather cap and aviator sunglasses that Mercury provided, and the group reveled in laughter.
When the idea of heading to a bar featuring a lively, predominantly male clientele was suggested, the friends attempted to dissuade Diana, humorously warning of potential tabloid headlines that could follow her attendance. Yet, it was Mercury’s encouragement—”Oh, let the girl have some fun”—that ultimately swayed the decision to allow Diana to accompany them. What began as a light-hearted evening gradually evolved into a spontaneous outing, with Diana humorously stating she would only stay long enough to order a glass of wine.
Once at the bar, Diana managed to blend in so seamlessly that patrons mistook her for Mercury’s male companion, a fact Rocos illustrated by saying she embraced the role with delight. However, her foray into nightlife lasted only about 20 minutes, after which a cab was arranged to return her to Kensington Palace, with her disguise intact for the journey.
Reflecting on the escapade the next day, Diana sent Rocos a note, folded neatly, expressing how much she had enjoyed the adventure. Rocos fondly recalled, “I can transport myself back to that lunch and just see Diana throwing her head back laughing,” highlighting the joy and freedom she felt during such moments of companionship and spontaneity.
