In the early days of massive open online courses (MOOCs), I initiated a personal venture aimed at obtaining an education equivalent to an MBA by utilizing free online courses. Platforms like Coursera and edX made waves in the educational landscape when I discovered that prestigious universities, including prominent business schools, were offering their courses for free. This revelation fueled my ambition to gain a business education without incurring the steep costs associated with traditional degree programs.
Dubbed the “No-Pay MBA,” I chronicled my journey on a blog at www.NoPayMBA.com. I completed my goal in 2016 and followed it up by writing a book designed to assist others looking to embark on a similar self-education path (Don’t Pay For Your MBA, HarperCollins, 2017).
After joining Class Central, I reflected on how my approach to this educational project might evolve, especially given the considerable expansion in available courses and resources.
During the time I pursued my No-Pay MBA, there were limited business MOOCs at my disposal, thus leading me to enroll in all available options.
However, the landscape has dramatically changed; declaring that I could do the same today would be an understatement. Class Central currently lists over 6,000 free business courses offered by a myriad of universities worldwide.
My experience led me to understand that piecing together an MBA-level education requires more than merely completing a list of courses. This is due, in part, to the differences in breadth, duration, and rigor that distinguish MOOCs from traditional on-campus programs, as well as the opportunity to customize one’s learning experience to meet personal educational needs.
My suggestion is to kick-off with foundational business principles through introductory courses, gradually developing general business skills, and eventually concentrating deeper in a specific area of interest.
Below is a curated list of courses following this philosophy, sourced from the top business schools according to U.S. News & World Report. I cross-referenced this list with Class Central’s database and identified approximately 90 courses from these elite institutions:
- University of Pennsylvania (Wharton)
- Northwestern University (Kellogg)
- Stanford University
- University of Chicago (Booth)
- Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Sloan)
- Dartmouth College (Tuck)
- Harvard University
- New York University (Stern)
- Columbia University
- Yale University
- University of California, Berkeley (Haas)
I prioritized courses from these institutions not to undermine the quality of MOOCs from other notable business schools, such as the University of Illinois’s iMBA program, but rather, to streamline the selection process and to illustrate that high-caliber MBA content is readily accessible.
Note: The curriculum below represents a robust MBA program, though it does not encompass every potential topic within an MBA, as some critical areas like project management, micro- and macroeconomics, and business ethics are omitted. Additionally, operations management coverage is relatively limited.
Another Note: While many courses charge fees, they can all be audited for free, whether in whole or in part. If you are new to online learning, consider checking out our Beginner’s Guide.
