How Will Canada’s Leading Political Parties Approach Relations with Iran? – National

Global News posed a critical question to the primary political parties vying to form Canada’s next government: If elected, what measures will you implement to address the national security concerns, the stability of the Middle East, and human rights issues linked to the Iranian government?

Here are the responses, listed in the order they were received.

Conservative Party of Canada

The Conservative Party expresses solidarity with the enduringly oppressed populations of Iran, who have long suffered under the Tehran regime.

In contrast to the Liberals, who campaigned on the promise of restoring diplomatic relations with Tehran and took considerable time to designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist entity, the Conservatives recognize the substantial threats the regime poses to both the Iranian populace and regional stability.

The party plans to collaborate with international allies to enforce stringent oil sanctions against the Iranian government, thereby crippling one of its key revenue sources. Additionally, Conservatives aim to boost Canadian oil and gas exports to allies in the Indo-Pacific and Europe, diminishing their dependence on Iranian energy.

Furthermore, Conservatives are committed to real national security measures, a serious area of neglect during the Liberals’ extended tenure in office. They will ensure that Canadian intelligence and law enforcement agencies are equipped with the resources necessary to safeguard citizens domestically.

Measures will also include preventing the entry of regime representatives into Canada and enhancing efforts to combat money laundering linked to the Iranian regime within Canada’s financial systems.

The Iranian government remains a significant threat to global peace and security, not just through its military actions but also via the support it provides to allied groups and proxies. A new Liberal administration, led by Mark Carney, is expected to cooperate closely with the international community to mitigate this destabilizing influence.

As of early 2024, the Liberal government has classified ten new organizations as terrorist entities under the Criminal Code, including the Houthis, Samidoun, and the IRGC. This decisive legislative action provides law enforcement with expanded capabilities to prosecute terrorism-related offenses tied to financing, recruitment, and travel, enhancing the safety of Canadians.

A potential Liberal government under Mark Carney will persist in working alongside Canada’s national security and intelligence agencies to accurately identify and designate entities that warrant listing, imposing significant penalties on these groups and their supporters.

The Iranian regime’s blatant disregard for human rights, marked by its ongoing oppression of its citizens and its role in regional destabilization, continues to be a pressing concern. Canada has enacted sanctions against 208 Iranian individuals and 254 entities implicated in severe human rights violations.

Should Mark Carney lead a Liberal government, the administration pledges to uphold these stringent sanctions and measures, positioning them among the most robust actions taken by any country against Iran. Comprehensive strategies will be employed to dismantle the influence of this repressive regime and to hold accountable those responsible for its numerous human rights abuses.

The government will also collaborate with international partners to ensure accountability for the unlawful downing of flight PS752, while supporting the families of victims as they seek justice and reparations.

A Liberal administration under Carney will continue to endorse pathways to permanent residency for the families of PS752 victims, reaffirming a commitment to reunite them with their loved ones. Together with global allies, the government will keep urging the Iranian government to accept full responsibility for its actions, which includes making reparations for the suffering caused by the tragedy.
