(Reuters) – Huawei Technologies, a leading Chinese technology firm, is gearing up to evaluate its latest artificial intelligence processor, which aims to rival high-end products from the American chip manufacturer Nvidia, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.
According to sources with knowledge of the situation, Huawei has reached out to several domestic tech companies to assess the technical viability of this new chip, known as the Ascend 910D.
This new addition to the Ascend AI processor line is engineered to outperform Nvidia’s H100 chip, with initial samples expected to be delivered as soon as late May, the report indicates.
In addition, reports from Reuters suggest that Huawei intends to start mass deliveries of its previous generation 910C AI chip to clients within China by next month.
Over the past several years, Huawei and other Chinese firms have faced significant challenges in competing with Nvidia’s top-tier chips, which are crucial for training machine learning models—an essential process where data is utilized to improve algorithmic decision-making.
The U.S. government has sought to restrict China’s technological advancements, especially those related to military applications. Consequently, access to Nvidia’s most advanced AI chips, including the flagship B200 model, has been curtailed for Chinese entities.
For instance, the H100 chip faced a sales ban in China from U.S. authorities in 2022, even before its official launch.
While Nvidia chose not to comment on the matter, Huawei has yet to provide a response to inquiries from Reuters.
