Huawei Mate XT: A Revolutionary Tri-Fold Smartphone

In the evolving landscape of foldable smartphones, the past two years have seen significant advancements. As I’ve experienced with devices like the Honor Magic V3 and Pixel 9 Pro Fold, new iterations typically offer slimmer designs, improved camera functionalities, and enhanced battery life. However, the core design principles often remain the same.

Enter the Huawei Mate XT, which offers a fresh perspective on foldable technology. Its tri-fold feature allows users to transition seamlessly between three functions: it’s a standard smartphone, a hybrid device when partially opened, and a full tablet when fully extended. This innovative design sets it apart from its competitors, and while other brands are expected to unveil similar concepts later this year, none currently rival the uniqueness of the Mate XT.

Initially launched in China at the end of the previous year, the Mate XT is making its way to international markets. Huawei recently showcased this remarkable device during a media event in Malaysia, accompanied by the new 13-inch MatePad Pro and FreeArc earbuds. Given its intricate design, which essentially combines three screens into one, the pricing would naturally reflect its advanced features. The Mate XT will be available for €3,499 (approximately $3,600) this month.

The Mate XT comes in a substantial 16GB RAM and 1TB storage configuration globally, with no plans for smaller 256GB or 512GB versions outside China. When fully opened, the display expands to an impressive 10.2 inches, boasting an OLED inner panel that delivers vibrant colors and bright imagery.

Camera capabilities also shine with the Mate XT, featuring a robust 50MP main lens found in the Pura 70 series, paired with a 12MP telephoto lens that offers 5.5x optical zoom and a 12MP wide-angle lens. The device is powered by a sizable 5600mAh silicon-carbon battery with 66W charging capability. Notably, it stands as the thinnest foldable on the market, measuring just 3.6mm when unfolded, surpassing even the forthcoming Find N5 in this regard.

While the device runs on the Kirin 9010 chip, which may not match the speed of the Dimensity 9400, it performs adequately for everyday tasks. My initial experience has been positive, though I am eager to conduct in-depth usage to truly test its capabilities.

Setting up the Mate XT has already sparked excitement, combining its sleek appearance with a sizable display, significant battery life, and specialized camera technology to create a foldable phone that stands alone in its category. I look forward to exploring its performance in real-world situations and sharing more insights next week.
