Arrest Made in Cold Case of Missing Atlanta Woman
Authorities in Atlanta have made significant progress in a long-unsolved case involving the disappearance and murder of a woman who went missing over 25 years ago. Melissa Wolfenbarger disappeared from her family residence in December 1998, prompting an extensive investigation.
Following her disappearance, human remains were discovered by detectives in trash bags along Avon Avenue in both April and June of 1999. It wasn’t until March 2003 that forensic testing conclusively identified these remains as belonging to Wolfenbarger.
Recent developments have led to the arrest of her husband, Christopher Wolfenbarger, with sources indicating that he is facing impending charges related to Melissa’s murder. Fulton County Jail records confirm that Christopher was taken into custody on Wednesday morning and is now charged with murder.
The booking report reveals that the alleged offense is linked to a date of April 29, 1999, which aligns with the timeline of Melissa Wolfenbarger’s death as noted in the Atlanta Police Department’s Cold Homicide Cases database.
As the investigation unfolds, detectives are scheduled to provide further information regarding the case during a press conference at police headquarters at 12 p.m. on Wednesday. Coverage of this news conference will be available on Channel 2 Action News at Noon.
News of this arrest comes as part of a broader focus on cold cases in Georgia, which have seen renewed attention from law enforcement in recent years. The resolution of these cases can bring closure to families and communities affected by unsolved crimes.
